Since my Scotch coupons arrived yesterday(Thanks Leanne!), I decided to make a run to Walgreens this morning. This is what I purchased:

8 Scotch Bubble Mailers - $ .33 each with 15% off Walgreens coupon - Used $ .50/1 Mfrs. Cpns = Free

1 Starbucks Frappuccino - $ 1.25 each with In Ad Coupon -Used $ 1./1 Mfrs. Cpn & 15% Walgreens Coupon = $ .06

2 Packages Of Dried Cranberries - 2 for $ 3.00 - Used 15% off Walgreens coupon = $ 2.55

1 - 1/2 Gallon Jug - Used 15% off Walgreens Cpn = $ 3.18

2 - 100 count Fish Oil - on sale B1G1F - Used 15% off Walgreens Cpn = $ 5.94

Total was $ 11.73 + $ .94 tax = $ 12.67. I had $ 6.00 even left on a Walgreens GC, so I paid $ 6.67 out of pocket!

Is the Economy Getting Better? What Do You Think?

The White House and certain news media outlets are telling us that the economy is recovering. Am I missing something? Or are they just trying to paint a rosy picture?

If we are recovering, it won't be for long with the trillions of dollars that that are being wasted on pork. But I doubt this recovery talk since only .006% of the stimulus money has really been spent and not on what it should have been. And in the 6 months of our new President, he has spent over One Trillion Dollars.

If the economy is recovering, I don't see it here. People are still losing their jobs. Businesses are closing at a rapid rate. Houses are still being foreclosed on. Many people here are at the very end of their unemployment checks. They will be stopping soon. Then what are they supposed to do? We have more and more homeless families - many of whom have lost their homes because they lost their jobs months ago and can't find employment. My son still isn't able to sell his home in Florida, after trying for 2 and 1/2 years, at rock bottom pricing. State colleges are raising tuition at rates never seen before. The retail stores are empty considering our kids here go back to school in a few days. I see people shopping for back to school supplies ( the absolute necessities) at places who are deeply cutting the cost or selling things for pennies. Most of the action has been at Staples, Office Max, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and the Dollar Stores.

Personally I have seen electric rates increase 3.5% and 9.5% in the last year or so. My utility company is now talking about an 8.8% increase to take affect November 1st to pay for the cleaner energy that the White House mandated. My cable company has raised rates once in the past year and will most likely be doing it again soon. The city has raised water rates, garbage and sewer rates. Our health insurance co-pays jumped 12% on July 1st. Our health insurance premiums went up by 5% last January. Our city has instituted a yearly city property tax. So we will be paying that along with the county taxes, lighting district, sewer, school district, fire and police taxes that we already pay. Our state wants to add another 1% to our sales tax. My city will then charge 9.05%. Almost every time I go to the supermarket I see price increases on some products. The only thing I have seen come down is milk prices.
Gasoline prices have dropped due to supply and demand and the fact that the speculators were who drove up the prices to begin with. The few things that have decreased have in no way made up for the things that have increased. We had lost 30% of our money due to the stock market decreases. However the market seems to be coming back a little bit, but for how long, who knows.

That being said, we are very fortunate. We have a roof over our heads, food in our bellies and will not be adding to the unemployment rolls. We continue to save by cutting what we can every day. Cost cutting and saving has always been our way of life.

So please leave a comment and let me know what you think. I feel the American people know much better if this economy is recovering. I have learned over many years of experience to not believe everything our government tells you. I would especially like to hear from so many of you who have lost your jobs and haven't been able to find new ones. I doubt that you think the economy is recovering.

Money Saving Challenge - 7/30

Today was a quiet day. Just a few things done to save money in Precious's household:

- cereal with bananas, oj, coffee ( all from the stockpile )

- DH wanted two elliptical 7 day pill reminders. He found them on one site for $3.99 which he felt was the best price for each one. I found them on amazon.com for $ 2.87 each and cheaper shipping. I also was able to order and pay for the with my E-Certs from SwagBucks

- I was notified that I was picked for an advisory panel where I can get free products and gift certificates.

- I was able to order another Amazon.com E-Certificate from SwagBucks

- I did some cleaning using homemade all purpose cleaner.

- The mail today had 2 envelopes of coupons from trades, a coupon for a Free Sonic Sandwich, and two drawings ( PRICELESS) that my grandaughter drew.

- DH nor I went out in the van today so no gasoline used.

- Lunch was salsa and chips - both from our stockpile.

- We had asked our exterminator to replace the termite traps on our property since some of them were coming out of the ground. They called to say they have the new ones and will install them tomorrow. This is all part of our monthly payment to keep our home bug free.

- DH and I went for our usual swim this afternoon.

- The dishwasher will be run after 8 PM tonight on off peak hours. I will also be doing a load of towels in the washing machine.

- Dinner was pepperoni lasagna that I made yesterday. I baked it in the Nesco out on the patio table. I served it with a tossed salad. This was all from the stockpile.

- I will be reading Glenn Beck's book "Common Sense" tonight. It has been on the NY Times Bestseller for weeks.

Please feel free to leave a comment sharing with us what you did to save money today.

Money Saving Challenge; A Day in the Life of Precious - 7/29

This sleepy head slept until 9:30 AM. I must have needed it. After checking my e-mail, I took my Navy shower using Free after Coupon body wash, shampoo and conditioner. I also shaved my legs using a free razor (I keep my razor in a cup of rubbing alcohol which keeps the blades sharper longer) and shampoo from washing my hair. The water was on full force for less than 3 minutes. After brushing and flossing my teeth(I do this faithfully twice a day because I hate pain and paying the dentist), using free moisturizer with sunscreen and putting cheap after coupon sunscreen on the rest of my body, I put on a touch of Free lipstick. I have such a dark tan this year, that lipstick is the only makeup I need to use. I let my hair air dry.

DH and I had cantaloupe for breakfast that I snagged at the produce market over the weekend for $ .25 each. Since we only ate 1/2, that came to $ .125! We also had cheap after coupon Cheerios with on sale milk and our free Archer Farms coffee. While we were eating breakfast, I put the Free after coupon Pillbury Cookies to bake in the oven( dessert for the next couple of days) and a cookie sheet of stale crackers to crisp up since it was off peak hours here. After taking care of the dishes
from breakfast, I needed to run the dishwasher while it was still off peak hours. I filled each cup on the dishwasher with 1 Tbsp. of almost free dishwasher detergent. I cooled the cookies and put them in a container and the crackers were put in an airtight container to keep them from going stale again.

Next, I stripped two beds and put the sheets in the washing machine with free laundry detergent. Since they are sheets, I always use warm water instead of cold. I then hang them to dry in both bathrooms. I made up the beds with fresh linens before I started my grocery list.

After making the list and pulling my coupons, I got prepared to go out. I grabbed a Free cold bottle of water from the fridge and put the cooler in the van. I also made sure that my cloth bags were in the van so that I could get my bag credits at the stores. When you live in such a hot climate, you do this every time you venture out. The water saves me from having to buy anything liquid while I am shopping. The cooler enables me to shop at many stores without having my cold and frozen foods go bad. Eggs go in there too because you wouldn't believe what a hot car does to eggs out here! I did all my shopping at 2 stores this week(post is below) and I took the mail to the Post Office since it was on my efficient route for saving on gasoline.

When I returned from shopping, I took my picture for my previous post and then put the groceries away.

While I was out, DH had to clean the inside of the refrigerator and steam clean the tile floor in the kitchen. Someone never tightened the pickle jar after they used it and when he reached for something, it went all over the fridge and the floor in front of it. Needless to say, he was not a happy camper when I got home. But at least, he was able to use the steam cleaner in off peak hours.

For lunch the past couple of days, DH and I have been trying to use up leftovers from the refrigerator. We ate most of them yesterday but there was still a small amount of chicken in wine sauce leftover which I heated up in the microwave to save on electricity. I ate that since DH preferred to have Tostitos with Mexican 4 Cheese and sliced jalapenos.

When, off peak hours start at 1 PM, I try to do things where I don't have to exert a lot of energy since the A/C is set at 81 during those periods. So next
I spent an hour or so trying to catch up on filing coupons from the past two weeks and pulling the coupons from my binder that are expiring on July 31st. I need to be organized to save the most amount of money. Disorganization, over a period of time costs a lot of money!

Next I made a batch of sun tea using free after coupon tea bags, Alterna from SWM and cheap lemon juice from the $ .99 store. It only took about 30 minutes outside today to cook in my sun tea jar. We are making a very concerted effort to cut out soda in this household.

I transferred the meat that we will be using this week into the meat drawer in the refrigerator. I made up a couple of pans of lasagna, one for tomorrow and one for the freezer and this freed up some space. I put the lasagna together using free pepperoni ( instead of ground meat or sausage) that I purchased a while ago, cheap cottage cheese, noodles, and spaghetti sauce and $ .39 a bag mozzarella cheese from the sale at Fry's!

The only mail was our Visa bill which I immediately made a check out for paying it in full.

I did my points programs and used SwagBucks to search all day to build up points for an Amazon.com gift certificate. I did two surveys.

We went for our late afternoon swim for exercise and entertainment.

For dinner, DH cooked a Prime Sirloin Steak on the grill along with two ears of corn and I put some artisan bread to warm on the warming shelf. I served that with olive oil dipping sauce. We will have cookies for dessert later this evening. I also quickly sauteed some fresh mushrooms for the steak. It was all delicious served with a glass of chilled White Zinfandel.

Everything we ate today was in my pantry, freezer or refrigerator except for the corn which we like fresh. I will be trying my best to eat what we have here in the house so that I can put most of our grocery money towards our house buying goal.

Tonight, I will be making a loaf of whole wheat bread in the breadmaker after 8 PM(when off peak hours start up again). When I add the dry ingredients, I will be doing them 3 more times and putting them in Ziplocs so that all the dry ingredients will be ready the next 3 times that I make bread. Then I will only have to add the liquid ones. I, also will be doing some reading. I am still tired so will be going to bed early!

Please feel free to leave a comment and share with us what you did today to save money!

I Will be back with the Money Saving Challenge Tomorrow!

My sister is at the airport awaiting her flight to go back to New York. We had such a great time that I hated to see her leave. But we were very lucky to have 2 entire weeks together. That hasn't happened in years!

Anyhow I just wanted to let you all know that I will be back tomorrow with the Money Saving Challenge. I am hoping to make it even better than before since I will be ramping things up around here. I need to get into the extreme or guerilla savings mode if we are to accomplish the goals that we have set. :-) It is not easy with the way prices are escalating for food and other necessities. I am seeing rate increases on utilities and just about everything else going up. I believe inflation will be rearing it's ugly head for quite some time.

So I am off to try to get this house cleaned, the laundry caught up and perhaps take a nap. I am very tired.

See you all tomorrow!

Frugal Things We Have Done While My Sister Has Been Visiting!

My sister, Pat, and I have spent a bit of money while she has been visiting. However, we have done our very best to save as much as possible also. Here are some of the things we have done:

- I cashed in for a total of $ 150. worth of CVS Prescription Coupons a few days ago and yesterday.

- We have eaten most lunches and dinners at home. DH made us a gourmet meal a couple of nights.

- We went to Einsteins, which has the best bagels in the world and got their bucket of 13 Bagels and 2 containers of cream cheese for $ 15.08 out the door. That has made 5 quick and easy breakfasts.

- Pat got 3 pairs of Reebok sneakers and a men's T-shirt for approximately $37. due to the fact that she had a $30./60. coupon. She gave me a pair that she got Free with purchase!

- We have stopped a few times for cold drinks while on the road: mainly $.99 with coupon Sonic Chillers or we took advantage of their 1/2 price drinks from 2 PM - 4 PM or used free coupons that my friend, Leanne sent.

- We shopped for Christmas gifts for grandchildren, etc. We took advantage of clearance sales, $xx/$xx coupons, and rebates that would make the gifts free.

- We made a few trips to Fry's to do the Mega Deal.

- We washed a few loads of laundry on off peak hours.

- We each picked up a box of the Coach pencils free with coupon.

- For entertainment, we went swimming in the pool almost every day.

- We hunted for pad coupons in the grocery stores.

- We mailed out all of our rebates.

- We made a trip to Bookman's Used Bookstore( BIG THANKS to KC at:
http://www.desertdealsdiva.blogspot.com/ for giving us this tip) and received $1.00 per magazine in store credit. Pat put it towards a James Patterson book and I used mine toward a nice Disney Collection Storybook for my grandaughter. We also were able to get a 10% off on Senior Day which is every Wednesday. I have already started a new pile of magazines to trade in.

- Pat needed another book to read for her plane ride home this coming Tuesday. She was going to get it at SuperWalmart. Instead I suggested that we go to Goodwill to look for one. She was able to find one for $1.49! She reads fast! I became a recipient of the book she brought with her: James Patterson's newest book - Swimsuit!

- Most of our desserts have been from free or cheap ice cream..... Oh, the calories!

- We always kept our eyes open, while on the road, for the cheapest gasoline prices. We got it as low as $ 2.39 a gallon doing this.

- I got a very nice envelope of coupons from my trader friend, Leanne. Thanks Leanne!

- Pat took us out for dinner at Chili's as a Thank You!

- I took Pat out a few times. Once to Sweet Tomatoes using a B1G1 coupon for lunch. We also went to Garcia's using a $5.00/20. coupon. We ordered dinner online for take out from Pei Wei. As a first time customer, we saved 25% off the bill. Thanks again to KC for that tip!

- We have been taking our navy showers.

- I have received many samples, one of which was the Scott Toilet paper and wipes samples. I also have received about $6.00 in rebates and a few free magazines.

- We took a tour of The Olive Mill in Queen Creek and received very nice cloth grocery bags with our purchases.

Free Sneakers!

My sister and I did some more shopping yesterday. We went to Arizona Mills which has about 200 outlets and shops. I did some more buying for the Alexa and the new baby. I also purchased a couple of polos for DH at Eddie Bauer and a women's top for a gift.

But the best deal was my free sheakers. My sister had asked me a few weeks ago if we had a Reebok Outlet. I told her yes and asked why. She said that when she and her DH had gone on vacation in Massachusetts a few weeks ago, they had shopped at a Reebok Outlet and she had been given a $30.00 off $60.00 coupon. She said it had certain dates that it was good and it was while she is here. She said she would like to get her son and herself a pair of sneakers. When we went to the outlet yesterday, the sneakers were all B2G1F. After she found the 2 pair she wanted, she told me to find a pair and they would be the free ones. I was thrilled. I had just purchased a badly needed new pair a few weeks ago. But when they wear out, I will have these new ones to wear. My sister was very happy to do this for me, since I had taken her to the outlets, and she only ended up spending $37. for 3 pair of sneakers and a shirt for her son. All of the sneakers were originally $40.+

We ate lunch out again yesterday at Garcia's but since I had a $5.00 off coupon, it was a bargain. Neither of us were hungry for dinner, so DH had sliced filet mignon(leftover) cooked up with garlic and corn on the cob.

We ached when we got home after 3 pm from shopping. So into the pool we went for a couple of hours. It was so soothing.

Today, we plan on staying home for a while. We may hit the Fry's Mega sale later or not! :-)

Lots of Great Shopping Out There!

My sister and I have been seriously hitting all the great 60 -80% off sales at Kohl's, Children's Place, Ross, Gymboree and Carters. We have been using coupons also, 15% off at Children's Place, 20% at Gymboree and Senior Discount at Ross. These are just a few of the things we have purchased.
I just had to get a Classic Pooh Bear for my new expected Grandbaby and lots of new clothes for Alexa. Everything you see pictured added up to under $50.00! So if you are in need of clothes for your children, there are some terrific deals to be had.
Yesterday, I also got 4 Liz Claiborne tops for myself for $36.00 using sales and a $20.00 off coupon at Catherines. On Tuesday, I was able to snag 2 pairs of Erica Shorts(these wear like iron) for $ 4.00 each.
My sister is thrilled with the great prices. She has very little shopping where she lives. She has managed to pick up her DH an anniversary gift and has done some Birthday and Christmas shopping for her grandchildren.
We have been shopping for a few hours every day and then coming home and enjoying a cocktail out at the pool. DH grilled us a terrific filet mignon dinner on Tuesday night with corn on the cob and baked potatoes.
Yesterday I took my sister to Sweet Tomatoes for lunch using a B1G1F coupon. $ 14.10 for 2 buffets and 2 sodas was a great price.
Today, we are headed to the outlets at Arizona Mills. Then I think we will hang around home for a few days and just relax. Shopping is tiring!

I Have The Most Exciting News!

You all know how much I love my grandaughter! For those of you that don't remember, she is our first grandchild. She is now 2 and the light of our life. Since I have two boys, I was very excited when she was born. I have had such fun buying her pretty girlie clothes. Well, I did some of that yesterday while I was out shopping with my sister and we will post those deals later today.

But now for the news. My youngest son and his wife are expecting our second grandchild in January. I can't even begin to tell you how thrilled DH and I are. We are so blessed! Needless to say, my son and DIL are very excited. My son sent us an ultrasound picture this morning and it just took my breath away. So I will be patiently awaiting his or her arrival and shopping for the new baby over the next few months also.

Now, our goal of purchasing a home in New York where they all live is even more important than ever. That goal is our top priority and I will be going after it with a vengeance.

I think it is time to get my sister up so we can get going on our day. We plan on going shopping in Gilbert today and enjoying a nice lunch at Sweet Tomatoes. I hope all of you have a wonderful day!

I Will Be Around!

My only sister is visiting for two weeks. So I will be essentially vacationing and enjoying her company. We only get to see each other every 1-2 years. I am so looking forward to having a great time.

We will be shopping, eating, swimming and hunting down the deals. I will not be posting as often as I usually do. But I will pop in once and a while and let you know what deals we are doing and finding.

I will get back to normal posting when my sister flies home!

Basha's Has Filed for Bankruptcy!

Basha's has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. They say they are only closing 10 Bashas and Food City stores for now. You can look up to see if your store is closing here:

Money Saving Challenge - 7/12

Before I even ate this morning, I washed the car. It is not fun washing the car in the driveway in 91 degree heat. But it is better than waiting till it is 115 out later. We get a Free Car Wash with our oil changes but the car wash has been broken for a week or so now. So rather than pay for one, I did it myself.

Breakfast was egg omelets made with leftover bits of vegetables, turkey bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee.

I baked on off peak hours this morning. Since I always make sure the oven is full, I baked lemon poppy seed muffins with lemon glaze, oatmeal toffee cookies, and peanut butter cookies. I also baked a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread in the breadmaker.

We had a webcam chat with my son and grandaughter. That was priceless. I also received a nice call from my sister who is coming to visit for 2 weeks. I can't wait until she arrives. We are going to have such a great time.

DH washed the outside windows this morning while I was doing the car. He used a bucket of soapy water and a squegee. With all the dust that gets blown around here in the desert, they have to be done often.

Lunch was pizza rolls.

This afternoon, I washed two loads of clothes in cold water and hung them to dry. While I was doing that DH washed all of the tile floors.

I made a list of the coupons from today's inserts that I want extras of. I sent it to the girl I trade with.

Yesterday, I received a $ 10.00 Rebate in the mail. I also received another Amazon.com Gift Certificate from SwagBucks. I also took a survey for cash.

Dinner tonight is going to be spaghetti with hot Italian sausage. I have been cooking the sauce and sausage in my crockpot on low most of the day on the patio table. We will make homemade mozzarella garlic bread to serve with it.

Tonight I will be sketching out a tentative 2 week menu plan. The dishwasher will get run on off peak hours.

Please feel free to leave a comment and share with us what you did today that saved you money.

Money Saving Challenge - 7/10

It's been a busy day. I started the day by making DH and I, bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches on buns. Then I took my Navy shower and dried my hair.

Next I was off to Kohl's with a 15% off everything coupon in my wallet. I found one top for me on sale for $ 14.40( orginal price was $ 24.) before the 15% discount and all these cute tops, pj's and the dress for my grandaughter. The tops were $ 3.60 each( original price $ 12.00 each), the pj's were $ 6.40( originally $ 32.00) and the dress was $ 8.00( originally $ 20.00) before the 15% discount. The total after my coupon was $ 36.37 for all! This is how I usually buy clothes at deep discount!

Then I stopped at Great Clips and used a coupon to get my hair trimmed about an inch. With coupon and tip, I paid $ 12.00.

Next was a stop at CVS to get DH's prescription( $30.) and 2 bottles of Dawn( $ 2.00). I paid with $ 19.52 that I had left on my Free prescription Giftcards and the balance of $ 12.10 in cash. I received a $10.00 Prescription Giftcard because I had a coupon and $ 1.00 in ECB's for the Dawn purchase.

My last stop on the way home was at Jack in the Box for our treat for the week for lunch. I had a B1G1F coupon for their mini sirloin burgers, so I paid $ 3.99 for lunch for the 2 of us. Each mini sirloin burger order has 3 of them. It is too much for one meal so we each have one left for dinner and I will make up a salad to go with them.

We continue to live with the lights off in the daytime, turn the hot water tank off during on peak hours, cook outdoors, keep the A/C at 81- 82, use the dishwasher and washer during off peak hours and keep all TV's radios, computers, etc. off during on peak hours.

Last week DH bought a new net to skim the pool. The old net seemed so wasteful to throw out just because the netting was ripped. DH hates to see all that metal and plastic go to the landfill. We have been trying to think of where we could buy the netting to fix the old one. Finally DH decided that buying a piece of cloth screening from a hardware store would work and be a lot cheaper than buying a new net each time the net rips.

Over the last few days, DH has steam cleaned some of our carpeting. It looks new and we saved a fortune over paying to have it cleaned. We own our own steam cleaner.

I received 2 more Amazon.com gift certificates from SwagBucks. I have almost enough again to order a DVD for my grandaughter.

DH contacted our TV cable company yesterday. When we first ordered cable, we got a bundled deal. They have now unbundled it and we pay for everything separately. So DH called and cancelled the movie tier that we never watch anyhow and we will save $6.30+ tax every month.

I will be spending some time this afternoon searching for coupons to use for restaurants and retail stores while my sister is here. If anyone knows of any great printable coupons, please help me out ny leaving the web address in comments. Thanks! We both like to shop and eat out but like to do it as cheaply as possible.

We will be going for our usual swim in an hour or so. Reading is on the agenda for tonight!

As usual, please feel free to let me know what you did to save money today by leaving a comment.

All Those Energy Saving Things Do Pay Off!

If you ever wonder if all those little energy saving things I do pay off, here is the proof. I just received my electric bill. Remember I have an all electric home. This is the first bill of the really high summer rates which are 20.03 cents per kwh ON PEAK and 6.30 cents OFF PEAK! So I do everything I can to shift our usage to off peak hours. Things like A/C and the refrigerator can't be shifted though. So I just set the A/C temp to 81-82 during the On Peak hours. The hot water tank is turned off from 1-8 PM.

My bill this year for the past 30 days is $ 163.69. Last year's bill was $ 184.10. It has been a few degrees cooler this past month than last year same time. The average bill for the same size square footage home with a pool in my area this past month was $ 252.90. My bill is $ 89.21 lower.

I will continue to be conscious of all the little things I can do during the day so that my bills continue to stay way under the average. Bills are headed no where but up and if the Cap and Trade Bill passes the Senate, they will skyrocket. So be prepared to do everything you can do to keep them as low as possible. It DOES pay off!

SuperWalmart, CVS, Bashas and Walgreens!

This is a follow up of the actual grocery shopping that I did after I took a "second look" at my list in my previous post. This is what I purchased:

SuperWalmart:

1 Bottle of Hunt's Ketchup- $ 1.00 -(it wasn't on the list, but I had a Free coupon)=Free

1 Oscar Mayer Bun Length Beef Hot Dogs - $ 2.50 - Used Free Mfrs. Cpn = Free

3- Hefty 22 count One Zip Quart Storage Bags- $ 1.00 - Used $ 1./1 Mfrs. Cpns= Free

Total OOP was $ .79

CVS:

3 Bottles Gold Emblem Flavored Water - $ .75 each = $ 2.25

Used $ 2.00 ECBS

Total was $ .25 which I paid using a Free Prescription Gift Card so nothing OOP!

Bashas:

8 Bottles of Tonic Water - $ .77 each = $ 6.16

Total OOP was $ 6.16.

My rollover grocery budget was $ 126.83 minus the $ 7.19 I spent today leaves $ 119.64 for the rest of the month!

The List- Taking a Second Look!

We all make lists. I make to do lists every evening for the next day. I make goal lists. But the lists that I make most often, and I will bet that you do too, is the To Buy list.

Over the past few days, I have been making my to buy list. Things that I think are necessary for me to pick up this week. At the time, I just jot them down and don't take a second look until I am ready to actually plan to go get those items. Then, I always take a second hard look.

Here are the things I jotted down over the past few days:

Bathmat

Paper Bathroom Cups
Cleaning Wipes

Tonic Water
Cherries

Hot Dogs
Storage Bags

Ice Cream

Water or Flavored Water

Bread

I took a second look this morning like I always do. I decided what I did and didn't want to buy and I will tell you why:

Bathmat - I have a spare in another room that I can just move it to my 2nd bathroom.

Paper Bathroom Cups - In an effort to not only save money but stay green, I will use a washable cup.

Cleaning Wipes - I will make my own. Here is the recipe: http://organizedhome.com/make-your-own-cleaning-wipes

Tonic Water - We could give our gin and tonics up but since we like them in the summer we
are not going to. I buy the tonic water cheap at Basha's. If I had debt I would be cutting out both the tonic and the gin.

Cherries - They are on sale at Safeway cheap; however I have fresh peaches and plenty of canned and frozen fruit, so I will not buy them and use what I have instead.

Hot Dogs - I will get them as cheaply as I can for a meal this week.

Storage Bags - I like to stock for when I cook bulk amounts of chicken or ground chuck. But since I still have a few boxes, it can wait till I find them cheap.

Ice Cream - It's cheap this time of the year, so I will look for a deal.

Water or Flavored Water - Whatever I can find cheaply because there are good sales right now.

Bread- I will make a loaf in my breadmaker.

By really taking a hard look at my list, I figure I knocked $24.00 off of it. That is $24.00 more to go in savings toward my house buying goal.

Are you saving for something or trying to pay off debt? Then you should also be scrutinizing every to buy list that you make.

Do this simple exercise every time you make a list and you will see the dollars just add up. It is worth the few minutes it takes! It's your future!

I have actually done my shopping and will post it later after I get a few things done around here!

Enjoy Your 4th of July!

God Bless America! I wish all of you a wonderful day to celebrate the Freedoms that we have today because of the all of the brave men and women over the decades who have fought to give us our liberty. Starting with the first Independence Day and continuing on to our Brave Men and Women who serve in Iraq, Afghanistan and all of the other countries where they are based. God Bless them all!
I hope everyone enjoys their parties and cookouts with their families. DH and I will be taking the day off to do just that. A day of R&R which will include a nice swim in the pool and a cookout of hamburgers served with a little potato salad, corn on the cob, and ice cream for dessert!

Our Cheap Dinner!

This is the delicious cheap dinner that we just finished. I shelled and deveined about 1 lb. of shrimp earlier today. I put it on metal skewers and sprinkled it with olive oil and spices. DH grilled it outside. Alongside, he grilled some of the fresh pineapple that he cut up yesterday. Grilling the pineapple makes it so sweet. While he was doing that, I was cooking some Spanish Rice on the stove. We decided that we didn't need a vegetable with this meal. We are both full.

1 lb. of shrimp - $ 1.99

1 pkg. of Spanish Rice- Free after coupon

Fresh Pineapple - Free after coupon

We each had a glass of ice water with our dinner, so it cost about $1.00 each! I always get excited knowing that we could eat really cheaply if we needed to.

Since today was an off peak day for electricity because of the holiday, I didn't mind using the stove. I also used the oven to make lunch. I can't tell you what it was because I was test marketing a product for a company. Let me just say that the product was delicious.

For breakfast this morning we had eggs, toast, juice and coffee.

I also took advantage of the off peak rates to run the dishwasher and to do another load of wash. That load is now drying on the rack in the bathtub.

DH planted our two lantanas using the soil that I got on clearance at CVS. While I was shopping for that and the ice cream, I was lucky enough to find two new coupons. One is for $.50/1 Tropicana Juice(12oz.) and one is for $2.00/1 Corona Extra or Light Beer and (2) 1 liter bottles of Fiji Water. I know that I will use the OJ coupon. The beer and water one will get used if there is a good sale.

With the exception of these few things, DH and I spent the day getting some R & R. Tomorrow we will be enjoying the holiday with a cookout and then watching the fireworks. I wish all of you a Happy 4th of July!

Please feel free to leave a comment and share with us what you did to save money today.

A Quick Run to CVS!

Thanks to my friend, Leanne, sending me some Ben & Jerry's coupons, I was able to take advantage of the sale at CVS. Thanks Leanne! So this is what I purchased:

4 Pints of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream - $ 3.00 each - Used $ 1./1 Mfrs. Cpns = $ 8.00

1 bag of Miracle Gro Potting Soil - on clearance for $ 1.49

1 Reese Fast Break Candy Bar( I needed a filler) - $ .67

Used $ 10.00 in ECB's

Total was $ .25 including $ .02 tax which I paid with a Free Prescription Giftcard so NOTHING OOP. However, I also received my quarterly ECB's of $ 11.50 so this was a really good trip!

DH is planting 2 Lantanas that he purchased at Home Depot for $ 2.50 a piece this morning so the deal on potting soil was just perfect.

Comments That Are Just Uncalled For!

You know I try my best to help everyone out here on their journey to being self sufficient by leading a frugal life and saving your money. I don't charge for this information. It is all given freely in the hopes that it will help all of you along the way. I love doing it and it keeps me accountable to myself. I also love posting your comments that so many of you share with us so that we can learn from you also.

I know some of you are better at English than I am, although I Aced it when I was in high school and college. But over the years as I have gotten older, the English may not be what it used to be. For that I will not apologize. Sometimes, I have run on sentences or it isn't written properly. Oh well, get over it! It's just me and I will survive without someone correcting my English. You may think your comments are funny. I don't!

So when I get a comment like the following, I just deem it unnecessary:

You said we chatted with our son on the cellphone he sent us. We chatted with our grandaughter and DIL on the webcam. Both to me are PRICELESS!

Which are the priceless ones? The DIL and grandaughter or the cellphone and the web cam?

Now let's get real! I think you know what I deem PRICELESS without asking. You say you just thought my English was funny. You could have easily kept that to yourself. I think the comment was meant to inflame.

I am sorry that I even feel the need to post on this subject but comments like this are the reason I took my blog private before. I refuse to do that again because someone goes out of their way to be unkind. So as my mother always told me, " If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all!" And if you do say it, it will not get posted!

Money Saving Challenge - 7/2

I don't know about you but when I sleep 1/2 of the morning, it seems like my day gets off to a wrong start. I never got up until almost 10am, so I felt like I was off kilter all day. However we did get a few things done today moneysavingwise.

- Breakfast for DH was toast, oj, and coffee. I never ate breakfast since I got up so late.

- We chatted with our son on the cellphone he sent us. We chatted with our grandaughter and DIL on the webcam. Both to me are PRICELESS!

- DH went and got the oil changed in the van. I was disappointed that I couldn't find a $ 5.00 off coupon; however since we go to the same place all the time and they know him there, they gave him the $5.00 off without the coupon and also upgraded the quality of oil for free. We get a free car wash with the oil change also.

- DH decided to to to Home Depot to get a new net for cleaning the pool. Our net was torn from the sun beating on it. Home Depot sells them cheaper than our pool store. I gave him a $5.00 off competitors coupon to defray the cost.

- I spent some time picking up for the holiday weekend and planning our holiday menu.

- UPS delivered our new Kitchen Aid Toaster from Amazon.com. The one we had died. I used Amazon.com gift certificates from SwagBucks to defray the cost.

-Lunch was cheese and crackers and Crystal Light.

- Today's mail brought a huge envelope of coupons, that I picked, from the past 3 weeks inserts from my friend who I am trading these for BTFE, Tyson and Campbells soup labels. I just love not having to buy Sunday newspapers at $2.00 each for these.

- In the mail, I also received the Pssst Coupons for Velevetta Macaroni and Cheese Cups, a coupon for Free Pillsbury Refrigerated Cookie Dough, and a $ 3.00 check.

- When DH and I went outside to swim for a couple of hours, we made some decisions on what plants need replacing. There are just a few. DH will probably get those over the weekend.

- I managed to get one load of laundry washed before peak hours and hung to dry.

- Dinner tonight was turkey stir fry. DH cut up the turkey, onions, carrots, celery, green pepper, fresh pineapple and mushrooms. I made rice and cooked the stir fry. I made a homemade terriyaki sauce for it. It was so good!

- I made 8 qts. of Raspberry Ice Crystal Light tonight. We saved a plastic gallon jug from water to use for it.

- Tonight we will watch one TV show and the rest of the evening, I will be reading. I will file the coupons that came today in my binder while we watch TV.

Eating Out is Expensive!

Josette asked me in one of the comments:

Hello, I enjoy reading your blog. I have to admit I can save more money if we would not fall into the trap of eating out.

Mostly this happens if we are out and about and time is short. I have 4 little ones and usually I pack snacks in my bag and bring water. Sometimes after a busy day I forget to have a meal planned and ready for when we come home. Do you have any suggestions for Easy meals with simple ingredients yet that are healthy? (my kids are ages 5,3,2 and 10 months)

Josette has the same problem as I am sure many of you have or many of us had. Running around will wear you out even without 4 little children. I answered Josette somewhat in comments before I decided to make a post about it. Hopefully this will help her and many others.

When my kids were little I used to make a dish for those crazy hectic days that even DH would eat. I always had cooked ground chuck with onion in meal sized portions in the freezer. I would cook up 5 pounds at a time with a few diced onions and bag it. So I could pull the bag out and throw it in a skillet until it was warmed through, add 2 cans of condensed vegetable soup, undiluted, salt and pepper to taste and chili powder, garlic, oregano and basil. Then I would add a bay leaf and let it simmer a few minutes to incorporate the spices. Remove the bay leaf before serving. I would add whatever rolls or bread we had and we were ready to eat.

On the days I knew I would be out a good portion of the day, I would throw a meal in the crockpot, some meat, veggies, and a sauce. When I would make lasagna, I would make 2 pans. One for that night and one for the freezer for a hectic night. Two great crockpot recipe sites that I frequent are:

http://crockpot.cdkitchen.com/ and http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ .

Many nights I would throw some tomato soup on the stove to heat up while I made grilled cheese sandwiches.

I would always keep chunked cooked chicken in the freezer so that I could make a quick stir fry with whatever veggies I had on hand. Use a bottled stir fry sauce, a seasoned packet or your own sauce recipe and you have an easy, quick meal.

It is really easy to open a jar of spaghetti sauce and heat it in the micro and cook some pasta on the stovetop. Just add a tossed salad and you have a healthy meal.

Keep grilled chicken breasts on hand( cook extra when you grill out) so that you can slice them and put them on a salad for a quick Chicken Caesar salad. Keep cooked penne pasta in the fridge and last minute add pepperoni, sliced black olives, diced cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes and Italian dressing. Add bread or rolls and you are set. We also can always pull a steak or hamburger out of the freezer to grill and add a salad.

Many nights I will cook enough for 2 meals. I run my errands on the second meal day like I will be today.

I know there are nights you just can't bear to turn on the burner. Keep a frozen pizza in the freezer or a frozen family meal. That way you won't be tempted to eat out.

When all else fails, pick up a rotisserie chicken in the deli of your favorite store and a bagged salad. It is much healthier than fast food. There are many more ways to do this that come to mind but you get the idea.

We haven't eaten out at a restaurant since the night before my son left for New York. That was Saturday, April 25th and we celebrated the last night together, here in AZ as a family. We can afford to eat out anytime we want. But I would much rather cook at home and know that it is healthy and what is in my food. I also think my food tastes much better and I know that my hands are clean when I cook and serve it.

Eating out is very expensive. Cut out a few of those meals and you will be money ahead. Always pay CASH when you eat out. If you can't pay cash, then you can't afford to eat out.

DH and I like to eat out once in a while. But we pick and choose when we do that. We have even decided on our anniversary one week from today to grill some filet mignons, add a baked potato, some salad and a glass of wine and we will have a better celebration than going out to any restaurant.

Most likely we will eat out a few times while my sister is here. But we do not make a habit of eating out once a week. Once in a while we will pick up fast food as our treat for the week but we don't make a habit of it. I would much rather bank that money!

If you have any ideas to share with Josette or us, please feel free to leave them in the comments section.
