Homemade Barbecue Sauce

We have company coming for dinner on Sunday night so we will be grilling chicken intead of having leftovers. We also have DH's siblings coming for the long Labor Day weekend.  So this morning I decided to  make a batch of the best barbecue sauce in the whole  world. This is my MIL's recipe and in the 43+ years that DH and I have been married, I have never tasted better! Sure I love Chiavetta's BBQ chicken, like we had last night, when I want a night off from cooking dinner. However, I make this a lot because it is so much better!

So I  decided to cook up a double batch so that I would have it for both weekends. All of the  ingredients are in the picture except for the ketchup and water. So here is the recipe:

Ruth's Barbecue Sauce:

1 Tsp. Salt
1 Tsp. Chili Powder
1 Tsp. Celery Seed
1/4 cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Vinegar
1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce
1 cup Ketchup
2 cups Water
3 Drops  of Franks Hot Sauce

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to  a boil. It is a thin sauce.  If you like it a little thicker you can add just a little cornstarch dissolved in cold water to thicken it. After  you add the cornstarch let it boil for a few minutes so that the taste of the cornstarch goes away.

Here is the finished product cooling. When it is cool, I will divide it into 2 glass jars and refrigerate until I use it. My mouth is watering while I sit here writing this.

While the barbecue sauce was cooking, I was also blanching up all of that broccoli that I got so cheap at Top's.  Then I bagged it for the freezer. I like to multi task when I can!

Do you have  a special Barbecue Sauce that has been handed down in your family? If so, please leave a comment and share your recipe with all of  us!

This sounds good. Have you ever tried freezing it?

I LOVE Sandra Lee's semi-homemade sauce. It's basically a reduction of cherry preserves and cherry coke, then she adds teriyaki and regular BBQ sauce. I find it a little sweet, so I add canned chipotle peppers to give it a little heat and a smokier flavor.

Hi Lucky,

No, I have not. It gets eaten much too fast around here!

Hi Boogie,

Welcome to my blog. We were big fans of Sandra Lee until we had to pretty much not use any processed foods anymore. DH still watches her show once in a while because there are still recipes we can use. If I can find SF cherry preserves and use diet coke,I may try it. Thanks so much for telling all of us about it. I am off to look for the recipe on the food network site.

Hi Precious.

My husband and I have been looking for a barbecue sauce recipe and yours seemed to have everything in it that we wanted - so I made a batch this afternoon. Wow! So good! Bottled and in the fridge - I cannot wait to use it tomorrow! Thank you so much for sharing.

HiLindy,

That was so fast! I hope you enjoy it as
much as we do. It is especially good on chicken on the grill where you can keep slathering it on as you grill.
