If you have read my blog for any period of time, you know that I have been trying to get a handle on our food budget since we moved back to New York. It has not been easy not only because of the high prices here in WNY and lack of good coupons but because of the necessity of eating a very heart healthy diet.
Now that I have kept a pricebook for a few months and because I have built up a stockpile over the same time period, I believe that I can set a monthly budget once again. When we lived in Arizona, I couponed alot and prices on everything but meat and fish were lower. Meat and fish are a lot cheaper here but everything else is much higher. In Arizona, we were easily able to eat on $150. per month. That is not the case here in WNY. We do not have the advantage here of many competitive grocery stores. Two places I shopped that I miss immensely are the $ .99 store and the cheap Produce Market up the street from where I lived. That said, I have had to work out a plan to deal with the expensive prices here and the diet we must follow.
So for the month of September I have set a budget of $ 50. per week for the two of us. I think DH and I can live on $ 200. a month for food, cat food and litter, HBA, and cleaning products. In order to do this, I will have to watch every item that I buy making sure that it is both a necessity and making very sure that I am buying it at the cheapest price possible without sacrificing quality.
You have seen the analysis that I have put on many of my grocery posts. That analysis will stay and be even more explanatory as I challenge myself next month. Each month I take about $ 500. cash out of the bank to cover groceries, gasoline, eating out, haircuts and the few incidentals we may pick up during the month. The new budget of $ 200. will be included in this figure. I will be using cash only for our groceries and when it is gone, it is gone. If I use it all in the beginning of the month, then I am going to have to be very creative the end of the month. Two things that will not be included in our grocery budget is eating out and alcohol. We eat out very little these days because of health concerns and we are cutting way back on any alcohol consumption. An occasional heart healthy red wine and an occasional beer is all the alcohol that will we will have. We don't need the calories but we do like the heart healthy effects of an occasional glass of wine or beer. We also occasionally have a lot of company staying here with us. When that happens, we will spend extra from our entertainment budget because I believe the $ 200. a month for us and extra mouths at the table every once in a while is all that will cover.
I have just one cat and she eats mostly dry food with a can of wet food thrown in as a treat once in a while. She also has to have her treats before bedtime. It is a ritual! The biggest monthly expense for her is scoopable cat litter. She weighs 17 lbs. so we go through a lot of litter. I will be looking for deals on this at both Petsmart and other places.
Being pretty well stocked on HBA at the moment, there is really nothing I need but I will buy it if it ends up being free so as to not deplete my stockpile. The biggest expense for us here is vitamins, fish oil and 81 mg. aspirin which we both use every day.
I have some cleaning products stockpiled but I mostly use water and microfiber cloths and homemade all purpose cleaners with bleach for cleaning and sanitizing. I don't like the chemicals in most cleaning products. The ingredients to make homemade cleaners cost just pennies.
I will be posting every thing that we buy all month long and letting you know what we are spending.I will do a full analysis of what we are buying and why. You will know what my menus are because I post them every Monday. This is an experiment that I hope will work out. If not, then I will have to bump up the food budget at the end of the month. I can't afford to skimp on our health. But I do believe that this budget is very doable for us.
Some of you may be able to do this for less money and some of you it will cost more. It all depends on what the cost of living is in your area. If you have any tips for me on how you purchase your healthy food, I am all ears. Please leave a comment and share with all of us.

How DH and I Buy Our Clothing!
This morning we took a trip to the Niagara Falls Outlets. It is a small outlet complex compared to the outlets we would go to in Arizona. But it has the stores that we like to shop at like Eddie Bauer, Liz Claiborne, Reebok and all of the brand name childrens clothing stores like Gymboree, Carters, Baby Gap and Childrens Place. But today we went for things for us! Usually I am buying for the grandchildren and I will for Christmas presents at a future date.
The main reason we went is because DH's sneakers were wearing out and he loves Reeboks. DH also loves Eddie Bauer clothing and I love Liz Claiborne. DH found 2 pairs of Reebok walking sneakers that retail for $74.99 each that were on sale for $ 49.95 plus on B1G1 at 50% off. He could have purchased 3 pair and gotten one free. However, he knows that 2 pair will last him for 5-6 years. So he settled on 2 pair that he liked. They cost him $ 49.95 for the first pair and $ 24.97 for the second pair. We also picked up an extra pair of shoelaces for them for $ 1.99. He usually breaks at least one pair over those 5-6 years. I had the Outlet Green Card( Free with AAA Membership) which would give me another $10.00 off however I also had a 15% off coupon or $ 11.54 off. So the total for 2 pairs of sneakers and one shoelaces including sales tax was $ 58.05!.
Next we went to Liz Claiborne. I could not find anything that I needed. Last stop was Eddie Bauer. We both love their classic line of clothing. It is always in style and wears like iron. I found the Ripac waterproof windbreaker that I was looking for which retails for $39.50 for $ 29.99 in a nice light olive green. DH loves their polo shirts because they are high quality and last for years. We lucked out because it was their special of the day. They normally sell for $ 19.99 each and he got 4 different colors for $ 9.99 each. DH also found a really nice long sleeve button down shirt which retails for $24.99 for $ 19.99. At checkout, I used my Outlet Green Card and got another 10% off or $ 8.99. Total with sales tax was $ 84.19! I also earned 3% of my purchase back with my Eddie Bauer Rewards card.
About every three months we will go to the outlets to look for things we need. The rest of the year, I fill in with clothing on rock bottom 75-90% off end of season sales. I never go into a clothing store without looking at the clearance racks. Every once in a while I swing by consignment shops or Goodwill stores when I am in the area. Sometimes I luck out and sometimes not. My last great buy was a Pendleton Blazer for $ 6.00 at Goodwill. It looked like no one had ever worn it.
When someone has a great sale like Catherines did a few years ago which was Erika shorts that I loved and that fit me really well, I buy a lot. These shorts retail for $ 30.00 each and 6 years ago I got 15 pair in different colors for $ 3.00 each! I am still wearing them! If I find socks, underwear or tops at a rock bottom price for either DH or I, I don't hesitate to buy in bulk and put some away for a future time.
A few things that I will not do when buying clothes is buy something JUST because it is on sale. I need to know that we need it or will need it in the future. I also will not buy an off color. I pretty much wear the same color palette so that I can mix and match my clothes and make many different outfits from a few items. I stick pretty much to navy, beige, olive green, a deep pink, and black. DH wears mainly beige or navy shorts and dockers, and blue jeans. He will stock on different color shirts that will go with them. I also try not to buy dry clean only clothes. I don't want to pay for my clothes over and over again because they need dry cleaning. Paying for them once is enough money to spend!
We try to take good care of our clothes so that they last forever. We never do messy jobs like painting or cleaning or yardwork in our good clothes. I save worn out items for those dirty jobs.
Please feel free to leave a comment and tell all of us how you save on your clothing.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce
We have company coming for dinner on Sunday night so we will be grilling chicken intead of having leftovers. We also have DH's siblings coming for the long Labor Day weekend. So this morning I decided to make a batch of the best barbecue sauce in the whole world. This is my MIL's recipe and in the 43+ years that DH and I have been married, I have never tasted better! Sure I love Chiavetta's BBQ chicken, like we had last night, when I want a night off from cooking dinner. However, I make this a lot because it is so much better!
So I decided to cook up a double batch so that I would have it for both weekends. All of the ingredients are in the picture except for the ketchup and water. So here is the recipe:
Ruth's Barbecue Sauce:
1 Tsp. Salt
1 Tsp. Chili Powder
1 Tsp. Celery Seed
1/4 cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Vinegar
1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce
1 cup Ketchup
2 cups Water
3 Drops of Franks Hot Sauce
Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. It is a thin sauce. If you like it a little thicker you can add just a little cornstarch dissolved in cold water to thicken it. After you add the cornstarch let it boil for a few minutes so that the taste of the cornstarch goes away.
Here is the finished product cooling. When it is cool, I will divide it into 2 glass jars and refrigerate until I use it. My mouth is watering while I sit here writing this.
While the barbecue sauce was cooking, I was also blanching up all of that broccoli that I got so cheap at Top's. Then I bagged it for the freezer. I like to multi task when I can!
Do you have a special Barbecue Sauce that has been handed down in your family? If so, please leave a comment and share your recipe with all of us!

Very Easy Spaghetti Sauce For the Freezer
Since I am going to have a busy of day of light cleaning and paperwork, I decided to throw together this simple homemade spaghetti sauce to put in my freezer. Whenever I know that I am getting a night off from cooking, I like to do something like this. So the ingredients are pictured above. The spice that is obscured by the handy gadget that has my Parmigiano Reggiano in it ready to be shredded is the oregano. Then I just dump everything into the crockpot on low for about 8 hours.
I don't measure spices, but I will try to estimate them for you. Here is my recipe:
2 - 28 oz. cans of diced tomatoes
2 - 8 oz. cans of tomato sauce
1- 6 oz. can of tomato paste
About 2 tsps. of oregano
About 1 tsp. of crushed red pepper flakes
About 1/8 cup of dried basil
About 1/4 cup of Parmigiano Reggiano
About 1 Tbsp. of Spicy Garlic Flakes
About 1 Tsp. of Fresh Ground Black Pepper
As you can see I am not brand loyal. Whatever I can stock on cheaply, I will. If I buy end of the season bushels of fresh tomatoes which I have done in prior years, I will just substitute those for the diced tomatoes after I give them a hot water bath and remove the skin and seeds. It will depend on what price I can get them at this year as to whether I buy them or not. If I have fresh spices that I have gotten at a good price or next year when I plant some, I will use those. We have a specialty store here that sells the spicy garlic flakes. If you don't have them, use fresh garlic ( which I have done many times),refrigerated minced garlic in the jar or garlic powder.
We like Parmigiano Reggiano so I always have a large chunk in the refrigerator. This one was a gift to us. I don't use salt because we are both on low sodium diets. But we do love black pepper.
When the sauce is done, I just ladle it into these containers, add enough turkey meatballs from the bags I purchased cheaply this week, and date them for the freezer. When I don't have ready made turkey meatballs, I make my own with a combination of lean ground beef and lean ground turkey. I cook them up and add them to the containers. Or I might cook up turkey sausage and add that! This way I always have healthy homemade spaghetti sauce ready to be thawed and heated through when I need it.
Do you have a special spaghetti sauce recipe that you could share? Or a recipe for anything that you make up for the freezer that is healthy and your family loves that you could share with all of us? Please leave a comment and let us know.

Quick Trip to Walmart and Tops!
I had to run to Walmart to buy two more spray bottles for my homemade cleaners. They have the cheapest ones in the size I use - $ .98 each! Since Top's is close, I stopped there also and was glad that I did because I found marked down produce. I was especially happy to find celery marked down since I needed it to make turkey soup for dinner. This is what I purchased at Tops:
1 Pkg. of Reduced Celery Hearts - $ .39
Large Pkg. of Reduced Broccoli - $ 1.84
Another 24oz. Pkg. Of Jennie - O Turkey Meatballs - $ 4.99 - Used $ .55/1 Peelie Doubled = $ 3.89
2 Pkgs. of Jennie-O Italian Turkey Sausage - $ 3.49 each - Used $ .55/1 Peelies Doubled = $ 2.39 each
1 Jar of Hellman's Low Fat Mayonaise - $ 3.99 ( expensive but a necessity)
Total was $ 18.78.

Money Saving Challenge - August 23
These are the things we did today to save money today:
- Our Samsung Color Laser Printer was low on the black toner. So before it runs out, I decided to research and see how cheaply I could get a new cartridge for it. Office Max was $ 76. and I had a $5./50. cpn making it $ 71. Staples was $ 82. However, after doing a little research I decided to purchase it from 4Inkjets.com. They are refilled toner cartridges which I have had great luck with in the past. The cartridge was $ 58.99 and I had a coupon code for 10% off which took another $ 5.90 off plus it ships free. I went through Ebates to get another 14.5% cash rebate so in the end the cartridge will cost me $ 45.36! A little bit of research saved us $25.64! (my quest to save money on every purchase)
- My son came and picked up his co-op vegetables. They were in Washington DC visiting friends for the weekend. Since the veggies included two watermelons, he gave us a yellow flesh watermelon. I removed all of the rind and cut it up into chunks, and put it in a Lock and Lock container. We will immensely enjoy this Free fruit over the next couple of days. ( free food saves money)
- Dinner tonight will be whole grain spaghetti and turkey meatballs with my homemade sauce. It's so nice to be able to just grab a portion of sauce from the freezer when I need it.( saving our health)
- Mail today brought $21.00 in rebate checks and my Refund Cents magazine which I will reading tonight.( upping the net worth and cheap entertainment)
- Did 30 minutes on the treadmill while watching the news.( saving on gasoline because I don't have to go to a gym)
- DH made tomato soup for lunch. ( loving it when DH cooks)
- Ran the dishwasher very full and air dryed everything.( saving on energy costs)
- Spent some time organizing my purchases from this weekend on the shelves in the basement.( if I know what I have and where it is, I won't waste money buying more)
- Since DH and I have no winter clothes except for jackets, gloves, scarves, and boots, I have started a list of the things that we need to buy. We think we can hold off buying long enough for the winter sales by layering and wearing our jeans. But when I see clothing that is 75-90% off I want to be ready with our list so I can snatch them up. ( saving on clothing by waiting for sales)
- Checked the printer today to make sure that it is set on draft. ( saves money on toner)
- Dusted the coils on the refrigerator. Dusty coils make it work harder. ( saving on electricity)
- Warmed the spaghetti sauce with the turkey meatballs in the microwave. ( saving on energy)
- Brought the water to a boil ( while pot is covered) for the pasta. Put the pasta in, turned off the gas and let it sit for 15 minutes. We had perfectly cooked angel hair pasta. ( saving on gas)
- It is a cold and dreary day here, so the A/C is off. Most lights have been off for the day. We just have one on in whatever room we are in. Computer has been off most of the day. ( saving on electricity)
- Since I only have about 60 stamps left from the forever stamps that I purchased when the PO first started to sell them, I am getting ready to buy about 500 more. I expect the postage rate will go up January 2, 2011 another $ .02 for first class. So I am going to start buying forever stamps over the next few weeks to stockpile again ahead of the increase. I have adjusted my budget to be able to do this. ( saving money on stamps)
- Checked my ingredients today to see if I have everything to make whole wheat bread. I do and that will be done most likely tomorrow. ( saving on cost of store purchased bread)
That's all we had time for today since both DH and I had Dr.'s appointments in two different towns, so we were running today. Good news is that DH's and my numbers on our lab work are headed down to where the Dr's want them. DH actually cut his tryglicerides # in 1/2. I cut mine low enough that I do not have to go on meds. There is a lot to be said for a healthy lifestyle. We will both continue to strive to do even better for our next checkups.
Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you did to save money today.

Total including bottle deposits and tax = $ 106.64!
ANALYSIS:
The Ajax and Lady Speed Stick earned me gasoline points. For every 5 products you earn 200 points worth $ .20 off each gallon of gas. I did 7 deals which earned me $ 1.40 off each gallon. Spending over $ 100. today earned me another $ .10 off a gallon. So I earned $ 1.50 off each gallon on a fill up just today. The points accumulate through October 2nd and you have until October 16 to use them. Since I was on my last bottle of dish liquid, like this brand, and have plenty of storage space, stocking was a no brainer for me. Since I just filled up yesterday, I am sure I will have many more points before I use them.
The popsicles we have once in a while plus the neighbors' kids enjoy one every once in while here. So instead of spending $ 4.99 a box for Edy's, like I have been doing, I bought these on sale.
Ground Turkey is on sale here this week for $ 5.99 a lb. Paying $ 3.89 for 24 oz. of turkey meatballs was cheaper. Buying the meatballs works out to about $ 2.59 a lb. So I stocked!
The chicken and coffee were the cheapest I have seen in a long time.
The toilet paper worked out to $ .0043 a square foot which is a phenomenal deal. ( See my post here:
Never Pay More Than a $ .01 a Square Foot )
I can always use carrots, eggs, and cottage cheese and they were good deals. The cheap frozen dinner will be added to my stash for a rushed night or quick lunch.
DH requested the strawberries because he likes them on his Cheerios and the jalapenos on sandwiches. The wrappers are great for packets for the grill and were cheap. My cat was almost out of cat treats and litter so they were good sale prices. We were getting low on cola and it was cheaper than buying Coke at the beverage center. DH was getting low on his clear carbonated waters to take his meds in. Since they cost me $ .69 or more for a small bottle, I wanted to see if the 2 ltr. bottles of Waist Watchers would work for him.
The Italian Dressing I can make with olive oil which is better for DH. The bread was cheap to make up French Toast for breakfasts. See my post here: French Toast We have it for a treat once in a while.

Money Saving Challenge - August 21
These are the things we did today:
- I have had severe arthritis since I was in my late 30's. I prefer to not take any more meds than I really need. But today, I had to have something. I looked for the Advil, only to find that I didn't have any. So off I went to Rite Aid and picked up the bottle pictured. Considering it wasn't on sale I did pretty well. RA had a coupon for $2.00 off which I used along with a $2.00 IP from a long time ago. You have to love no expiration dates. I also got 20% off with my wellness card. So after coupons, this bonus pack of 100 gelcaps was $ 3.91.( Saving on meds)
- Picked up my son's co-op veggies for him ( on my route, so saves him on gasoline)
- Filled the car up with gasoline getting $ .10 off per gallon with Tops Points- Paid $ 2.71 a gallon-(saving on gasoline)
- Changed the litter and cleaned the cat's litter box. I have to start looking for a great price on scoopable litter since I am very low on it. Crossing my fingers for a great sale! ( saving on accidents)
- Ran all of the errands in a circle to save on gasoline.(gasoline savings)
- Since my menu got rearranged this week because of the product I had to survey, we had the filet mignons( because it was a beautiful night to grill) last night instead of roasting the chicken. Since it is going to be cool and stormy today, I am roasting inside. DH wants a turkey breast instead of the roast chicken though. So I will do a roast turkey breast using the convection setting on my gas stove to save on energy costs.. You know what they say about the best laid plans. ( saving on energy; cook once, eat 3 or 4 times)
- We had a small leftover filet from dinner last night and a small potato from earlier in the week. In my quest to keep ahead of the leftovers, I sliced the filet mignon and sauteed it in a little smart balance. I also diced the potato and sauteed it in a little olive oil and garlic. That was breakfast this morning.( use up the leftovers; saving on the cost of food )
- The A/C has been off for a couple of days now. We got our gas and electric bill yesterday and it was $ 118.74. Not bad for the heat of the summer! It has been kind of nice to be able to have the windows open in the daytime these past few days.( saving on utility costs)
- Washed a load of whites in the HE with 1 Tbsp. of detergent. Hung them in the basement to dry.
( saving on energy)
- As usual I took my navy shower and used as little free shampoo and conditioner, etc.( saving on energy and using up the free samples)
- Mail today was my All You Magazine so did some reading and then cut some coupons and filed them in my binder.
- I only did 10 minutes on the treadmill today because that is all my arthritis would allow and that was an effort. I hope I feel better tomorrow.
- After dinner, DH and I will take a walk if it is not raining.
That's it for today. Please feel free to leave a comment and let us all share what you did to save money today.

Cutting Our Budget
If I had to cut my budget because financial circumstances had drastically changed, these are the major things that I would do:
- First, we would cancel all Cable TV. That would save me off my current price of $ 98.85 + tax( $116.00) a month for cable, telephone and internet about $ 38.90+ tax a month or $ 466.80+ tax a year.
- We would look at setting up my alarm system using Magic Jack or something similar and cancel the cable telephone service which would save me another $20. a month+tax or $ 240.+tax a year. Of course the Magic Jack would cost about $ 20. for the year, so the annual savings would be $ 220.
- We would cancel our monitored alarm system and just use the alarm without the monitoring. That would save me $30. a month or $ 360. a year.
- We would definitely cancel one of our cellphones which would save us $ 34. a month or $ 408. a year. We might even cancel both cellphones and just use the cellphone to reach 911. Cancelling the second cellphone would save us $ 10. a month or $120. a year.
- We would look into any low income programs that I could that would save me on school or property taxes or on heating bill costs. New York State has HEAP which helps you save on your utility bill but you have to have a very low income to qualify. Everyone qualifies for the Star Program for property taxes and then some people with lower incomes qualify for the Senior Enhanced Star Program when they turn 65 years of age. You have to fill out an application by March 1st of year to qualify for the Star or Enhanced Star Progams. You only have to fill out an application once for both Star Programs. NYS keeps track of it after that. Unfortunately, we had to own our new home by March 1st of this year in order to qualify for the Star Program. We closed on our home on March 26th so we will not have a break on our school taxes until Sept. of 2011. However, that said, because our home was not finished when they assessed it in March, we get a break on this September's school taxes and on next January's property taxes. We were only assessed at $105,000. for this coming year
instead of the full 100% value. Since our school tax rate has been set for the 2010 - 2011 year, we know that our school tax bill when it comes in September will be $ 2258. That is so much better than having to pay the full assessment value which would have cost us $5998.50. I will take that any day instead of the measely $30,000. off assessment that the regular star rebate will qualify us for next year. If I couldn't afford to pay the full school taxes and the hefty property taxes( the builder estimated our school and property taxes would be $8500. combined), I would sell the house and rent only if the rent would be less than the $709. per month that I pay in taxes because a mortgage is a non- issue.
- We would cancel the newspaper and read all of our news online. That would save us $ 286. a year including tip.
- We would lower the grocery budget to a set $ 100. a month instead of the $125. a week that we are spending on our healthy eating plan. That would save us $ 5300. a year! Wow! I have to work on lowering our grocery budget. This healthy eating has gotten away from me.
- We would change our auto insurance to the minimum requirements in NYS which would save me about $300. a year over the great coverage we have now. The homeowners policy I would keep to the full replacement value of the house.
- We would cancel all other paid subscriptions which total about $ 108. per year.
- We would keep our van longer than we had planned. Probably until it dies since we have no car payment. That would let the money we have set aside for a new car purchase earn more interest.
- We would not purchase any clothes unless they were absolute necessities. Then they would be purchased at rock bottom prices or used from the thrift store or consignment shop. We both have too many clothes and packed closets now.
- We would only use our A/C when absolutely necessary....probably over 82 and really humid and then would set it at 76. We would turn our heat down to 68 instead of the 72 we normally keep it at. I would be even more anal about utility savings. I would hang all loads of laundry, handwash dishes using two dishpans- one for wash and one for rinse.
- We would rarely use the sprinkler system on our lawn. Maybe once a day instead of the 3 times a day that we do now. Hopefully when the lawn is established we can cut way back on the watering. I would be so so much more mindful of water usage than I am now.
- We would cut way back on gasoline usage by only running errands once every two weeks and running them all at once. That would probably save us about half of what we spend now which is $100. a month. So we would save $ 50. a month or $ 600. annually.
-There would be no entertainment unless it was free. Free concerts in the park, free swimming at the public beach, borrowed library books, free DVD rentals, playing cards or board games or attending movies with free movie tickets.
- Every expense would be looked at with a fine tooth comb. If it is a necessity, it would get purchased on sale with a coupon. If not a necessity, it would not get purchased.
I think you get the idea of what we would do if our income was drastically reduced. Just quickly adding up the annual savings from the numbers that I put on some items here, it adds up to an annual savings of $ 24,916. That is a significant amount of money. I know that I could save even more with the other things that I didn't put numbers on. Every purchase would be thought about as to how to not buy it and everything that we do in a day would be scrutinized.
If the bottom fell out tomorrow and we lost most of our money, I know that we could survive and be very happy doing so. I like nice things and I like my few luxuries but being happy and loving your family is the most important thing in life.
So if you have had to drastically cut expenses due to reduced income or want to cut to bolster your savings, pay for a house, pay for childen's college, or your early retirement, what would you cut?
Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what youwould cut.

Comment on The Income Poll
Frances wrote on my income poll post:
Interesting poll results. I think it is admirable that you want to help all your readers. But keep in mind, we must all help ourselves. You can give guidance, and I love your guidance, but we have to do the work.
As I told Frances, all I can give is my advice and my experiences. But what I write are my thoughts and only mine. Your goals may be different from mine.
As I have said many times before, I write from my experience and you are welcome to use any tip or advice I give you or not use any of it at all. Pick and choose what you can use and leave the rest.
I never mind doing the work because over the last 43 years it has worked out very well for us. But someone else may not want to put the effort in that I do or may not have the time to do it. That is your choice. Your results will be different from mine. But if I can help someone just a bit, my job is done.
If you do not want me to actually break things down and get into the nitty gritty, just let me know. I can go in a different direction.....back to deal posting instead of frugality and the money saving challenge. If the deals are more important or there is something else that is more important to all of you, please leave a comment and let me know.

Income Poll Closed
The income poll is officially closed! About 40% of my readers took the poll. Were any of you as surprised by the results as I was? I really did not expect that 37% of the people who took the poll would have income over $ 80,000. But then, as I really thought about it, if you have two people working in the family, this is probably the median income for a two income household. Also as Lucky pointed out, income is all relative to your cost of living.
If you live in NYC, Washington DC, Chicago or other large cities, a household income of $100,000. or more is most likely an average or below average income. If you live in a small town in the midwest, $100,000. is a huge income. Living in Wash DC or one of those other large cities is going to cost more than living in the small town in the midwest. For example: If you make $100,000. it will cost you 89.7% more to live in NYC than in Lima, Ohio. Another example is from where I lived to where I live now. If I had $100,000 in income in Mesa,AZ, when I moved to Buffalo, NY, my cost of living went down by 3.5%. If I had moved to another town in Southern NY, my cost of living would have been 6.3% lower. If I had moved to the Albany area, my cost of living would have been 4.3% higher. So it all depends on where you live and what your cost of living is.
44% of you have income between $40,000. and $ 80,000. That was the majority of those who took the poll. Then, 13% of my readers are between $20,000. and $40,000. And 6% have incomes under $20,000.
What does this tell me? It tells me that I need to help all of you make the best use of your income as you possibly can. It has to be very difficult in today's economy to live and make ends meet if you have income under $20,000. DH and I have done it when we only wanted to spend a certain amount of money in a year to bolster our retirement savings. You really have to cut expenses to the bone. I will do my best to try to help you do this. The difference is that when we did it, we had no children at home. Even families making $40,000. to $80,000. can find it difficult today to make ends meet. And if you are making $80,000. to over $100,000. and live in a high cost of living area, you fall into the same difficulties. If you have debt, are paying for daycare for your children, are paying for college for your kids, or have a high mortgage, the money just doesn't stretch very far. And because of the national debt, things are not going to get any better. We will see inflation when they start raising interest rates and we will all ( yes everyone because the Federal tax brackets will go up) see a large increase in federal taxes if the Bush tax cuts are not renewed.
So I have my job cut out for me to help each and every one of you spend as little as possible, pay off those debts, save for college for your kids, save for your retirement and make every dollar stretch as far as it can. I promise I will try my best!
I have some things that I need to do around here today, but I promise that when I am finished, I will do a post on what I would do to cut my expenses if my income was drastically reduced. Till then.....

It Doesn't Get Any Easier Than This!
On Tuesday, I told you that I ordered 4 lbs. of nuts and fruits from Nutty Guys using a $ 25. Gift Certificate that I purchased from Groupon for $ 10. on Tuesday. I was so surprised when my shipment arrived today.
I raided the freezer and thawed a bag of Ghiardelli Chocolate Chips which I added to the above pineapple, cranberries, walnuts( just 1/2 a bag- I saved some for salads) and cashews and made this bowl of homemade trail mix.
After I mixed it really well, I put it in this large container to store on our pantry shelf.
DH and I will enjoy this for an occasional snack for 3 months or so. It sure beats buying those little little bags of Craisins Trail Mix for $3.00 each! It's so easy to make and so cheap!
I am always looking for new ideas to make trail mix. Please leave a comment and share with all of us what you put in your homemade trail mix.

French Toast
Lisa B. asked me in comments on my prior post:
You mentioned on my blog you freeze french toast. Would you mind doing a post detailing step by step how you do this?
There really isn't much to freezing French Toast. DH and I just make up an entire loaf of bread into French Toast when time permits. After it is all cooked, freeze it laid out flat on cookie sheets. When it is frozen, put it in freezer bags or use your foodsaver to bag it into portions. There are only two of us, so I put 4 slices in a freezer bag. These keep nicely for about 3 months in your freezer.
When we want French Toast for breakfast, we just grab a baggie of it and reheat it in the toaster oven, toaster or if you don't mind soggy French toast, you can do it in the microwave.
I hope this helps Lisa. Any questions, ask away.

Money Saving Challenge - August 17th
Plans got turned upside down a little last night. My son stopped by at 9PM on his way to Wegmans. Since I was going to go there this week, I decided to go with him which saved me gasoline. So we were shopping at 10 PM last night; hence no early to bed or reading for me. I just picked up some on sale local corn on the cob at 4/$1. and some cottage cheese, vanilla yogurt, orange juice and a few other things I always buy there.
These are the money saving things we did today:
- Since both DH and I had to go for labwork this morning, we could have easily stopped somewhere for breakfast like we did the last time. Instead we came home and had a late breakfast at 9:30 AM. DH had Cheerios and strawberries. I had cottage cheese with pineapple and sliced strawberries. Breakfast was healthier at home and definitely cheaper.
- My order for 30 Don Aslett Microfiber Towels( pictured) arrived today. They are a good size. They are folded in half in the picture. That is a lot of towels for the cost of $ 17.92. This is my quest to use as little paper products as possible and to save money in the long run. I will no longer be buying paper towels and they will also save me on some cleaning product costs. These work beautifully with just water. Another bonus is that they can easily be thrown in the washer and dryer. Today I will be folding them and putting them in an empty drawer in the kitchen so that I always have them handy.
- Entered all of my receipts, so far, for August to Rite Aid's SCR program. I also ordered a check for my July purchases which I almost forgot to do.
- I also received today a huge box of a product that a survey company wants us to try for them. So I will be substituting that for the chef's salads tonight and serving it along with fresh corn on the cob. There is so much product, that DH and I can make two meals from it. I love free meals.
- Exercised for 30 minutes on the treadmill after our late breakfast.
- I am big into genealogy and have always had a subscription to ancestry.com which cost me $ 299. a year for the deluxe world membership. My subscription is expiring and since I have most of the census records and other records that I really wanted from them in my research of all 4 lines of our family, I decided not to renew my membership. I now have a large list of other places where I can do research that are free.
- Ran the loaded dishwasher on a quick wash since the dishes were not that dirty. Then I let them air dry.
- I purchased a $ 25. Gift Certificate yesterday from Groupon for $10. for Nutty Buddy. They sent it to me in my e-mail today. BTW, it was not a Buffalo deal, but a Tulsa deal which anyone could have purchased since you place your order online. I have ordered 4 lbs. of nuts and dried fruits to make my own trail mix.
- The weather here is beautiful and the A/C is off. So DH and I really went to town cleaning the garage. We had to keep a lot of things for the claims rep from Atlas to see yesterday and they were stored out there. Some things he told us we could get rid of yesterday since they are documented and he has pictures. So they will go out with the trash tomorrow night.
- I just read the gas and electric meters and submitted the readings to the utility company. We used 790 KWH of electricity and 5 CCF's of natural gas for 31 days. The electric usage is 135 KWH higher than last month. But I expected that, since mid July to mid August was high in the 80's and the humidity was horrid. We had to have the A/C on the entire month until last night when we shut it off. The gas usage is up 1 CCF, most likely because we cooked a lot more for company and I put lots of veggies in the freezer for the winter. All in all, I believe I will be satisfied that we did well on the utility bill.
- Today was my day to clean all the bathrooms. I have a weekly schedule that I follow to keep up with the household chores. I used my homemade all purpose cleaner with bleach to sanitize surfaces.
- DH built a shelf in the garage above our garage door to house the extra 15 pieces of siding that we have. You never know if something happens down the road if you will be able to match it. I love that DH is so handy.
- I did some research on senior discounts in my area. I am compiling list.
- Tonight, DH and I are going for a long walk for more exercise.
- Later I will continue reading my book.
Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you did in your money saving journey today.

My Money Saving Challenge Day!
My family is back home safe in Albany and the rest of the family has returned here safely from their vacation at a cottage on the ocean. So back to my weekly schedule.
After sleeping late until 8:30 AM, DH made the pot of much needed coffee ( purchased on sale with a coupon). We had breakfast which was homemade banana bread that my DIL made for us. Next it was on the treadmill for 30 minutes to get my daily exercise while watching the news on TV. I now have the best diet and exercise buddy besides DH and a little wager to motivate me to become more healthy and lose some weight.
After my navy shower using free soap, free razor for shaving my legs, free after rebate shampoo, a free sample of Fekkai conditioner and on sale after coupon deodorant , I made up my needs list for shopping. Since I am pretty well stockpiled, I am only buying absolute necessities at the best rock bottom prices I can track. After dressing in my 6 year old shorts( purchased 12 pair for $ 3.00 at Catherines 6 years ago) and a shirt that was $ 3.00 at TJ Maxx brushing and flossing( using free products of course) my teeth and putting on my Free Covergirl Makeup, I grabbed my leather purse( $ 12.00 at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago), vacuum insulated auto seal stainless steel refillable water tumbler( $ 18.96 from QVC and it is by far the best one I have ever owned...keeps water ice cold for 12 hours even in a hot car), and my Foster Grant sunglasses( free after coupons and SCR), I was on my way. I always plan my errands in a circle to save on gasoline( last fill-up was $ .70 off a gallon with my Tops points). All stores were in town and very close.
First stop was Rite Aid for fish oil capsules. Since I had a $ 7.00 off coupon from Nature Made Rewards and a $ 2.00 off Rite Aid Video Values coupon, I was able to snag a 100 capsule 1200 mg bottle for $ 1.29. We also needed 81 mg. Bayer Aspirin so I purchased a 120 ct. bottle after coupon and SCR, it will cost me $ 2.99.
Next, I stopped at Dollar General to pick up a 100 load bottle of Gain 2x's Ultra Original Fresh HE Liquid Detergent for $11. There was an article in the Buffalo News this morning by the editors of Consumer Reports. This detergent is a Consumer Reports Best Buy pick not only for it's cleaning ability but for it's low cost. It cost about $ .12 per load less than Tide 2x'sUltra for HE's. This article was timely since I only had about 1 Tbsp. of detergent left. I could not find it lower anywhere else that I stopped at. You can bet that I will be keeping my eye open for a sale on it though. Of course, you know that I will get many more loads than 100 out of it since I only use 1 Tbsp. per load.
I also needed paper cups for the bathroom dispenser for the guest bathroom. We use plastic cups in ours but DH likes the dispenser for guests. Dollar General has the lowest Dixie Bathroom 200 ct. price of $ 3.00.
Then it was off to Aldi's to pick up a 1/2 gallon of milk at $ 1.39 ( rock bottom price for me). Next I went to Dollar Tree to pick up another pair of reading glasses for $ 1.00 since I broke a pair.
The last stop was at Save- A - Lot for 2 Tyson Whole Chickens at $ .79 a lb. That is the best price I have seen in a long time and we love chicken.
Back at home, I made roast beef sandwiches for DH and I on small onion rolls( purchased at reduced price) for lunch.
After stripping beds from the weekend and gathering dirty towels , I did 2 loads of wash in the HE's. When they were dry,I put the sheets right back on the beds and the towels in the linen closet.
At 2 PM, the claims representative for the insurance company for Atlas Movers came to see all of our damaged items and take pictures. DH is in the process right now of trying to find someone who will repair our marble game table. He is also is trying to find out if anyone can repair our beautiful floor lamp. Keep your fingers crossed that this process is done in a few weeks.
Next, a landscape company respresentative showed up to see what needs to be done to move our blueberry planting bed. The builder's engineers made an error when they placed the corner stakes on our lot. We had all of our landscaping done only to find out that one corner stake was 4 ft. off. So our blueberry planting bed is on what will be out next door neighbors property. The builder has hired a landscape company to take all the grass up in the area that will become the bed and make a new mulched bed for our blueberries inside the new corner property line. That should be done in the next few weeks.
Then I got the mail and was pleasantly surprised to get $ 6.00 in survey checks. I put them with the other checks that I will deposit at the bank soon.
Next I ordered two of the aformentioned tumblers from QVC as gifts. I went through Ebates so that I will get a 2.5% cash rebate.
Dinner will be homemade General Tso's chicken with brown rice. I made 4 extra chicken breasts the other night so will be using two of them for this dish( cook once, eat three times which saves on energy). I use the boneless chicken but no breading.
We are hoping to be able to turn the A/C off tonight for a few days since a cold front is on it's way through. That will save on the utility bill. I will be checking later to see what day I have to read the meter. It should be soon.
I told DH that I need to make a trip to Petsmart soon for cat litter. He told me that he thought he saw a 30 lb. container in the garage. I went to look and he was right so that will save me buying one for now and the trip also.
DH and are both tired from the weekend so it will be off to bed early tonight after some reading.

Income Poll on The Right
I have put up an income poll on the right side of my blog. The purpose is to give me an idea of what income demographic I should be speaking to when I post. Are most of the people who visit in one demographic rather than another? Should I be digging into the real nitty gritty on saving posts rather than just general information to really help all of you but to also show the lower income earners how they can save? This poll is totally anonymous and voluntary!
As I have told you prior, DH and I never made a large amount of money when we were working. We were your average middle income family. We just learned how to pinch a penny and save money very early in our marriage. The knowledge that we have accumulated did not come easily. It was done through a lot of research and trial and error. We watched a lot of our friends with incomes lower than ours, the same as ours and even higher than ours buy a lot more possessions than we had. I used to wonder how they did it when we couldn't. In later years, I realized it was because they used credit poorly. They always seemed to have the newest and latest. But it was because they were deeply in debt. After a few years, I realized that while they had "nice stuff", we had a large bank account. We didn't owe money for things that we had purchased a year prior. I think the biggest lesson that we learned was to be happy with what we had and not always be looking for more. Our goal was to retire early and have a very nice retirement and know that we will never run out of money before we die. We achieved that and now we have achieved the home of our dreams. So my goal now is to help all of you do the same. If I can just help one person through my posting then I have reached my goal.
I sometimes think that I am out of touch with my audience. If that is the case, then I might as well close this blog today because it isn't helping anyone. So the poll is to make sure that I am reaching the people who need it. The poll will be up until 8/20. Also if there are ideas that you have on what you would like to see me do a post on, please feel free to leave a comment. If I have knowledge in that area, I will try to help. I will be making a list of what you want to see and will try to help where I can. The only area that I will not write about is investing because that is a personal decision for each of you and you can find tons of information on the net to teach yourself all of the ins and outs. So please leave a comment with your ideas so that I can make this blog better for you.
I will be taking today through Monday off so that I can enjoy my family who will be arriving for a visit. I will be back on Tuesday; however I will be watching the poll and monitoring your comments.
Money Saving Challenge - August 11
I have been in a funk so I haven't been posting. Don't ask me why? Life is great but I just didn't want to post until my DIL wrote me today, after I sent her a picture of DH on the riding lawn mower mowing the lawn! Here is the e-mail she sent:
I showed ( my grandaughter's name was here) that pic. I asked “Who IS that on there?” She seems to mumble “Papa”, so I asked her “That’s papa?” she says “Grandpa!” Hehehe. Then she said, “Where’s Grandma?” Awww! I asked her what Grandpa was riding on, a tractor? She says “No, that’s a lawn mower!”.
Then she said “We go see Grandpa n Grandma in Bufado???”
I said, yes baby in a few days…
Cute or what?
This is Precious again! Amazing how a little 3 year old can put such a smile on my face. Her comments warmed DH's and my heart! And I am no longer in a funk! I can't wait until they all arrive. :-) It has only been about 7 weeks since we have seen them but it seems like an eternity!
Here are some of the money saving things I have been doing the past few days:
- Made all of our breakfasts at home. We have had cereal, eggs and turkey bacon, whole wheat blueberry pancakes, etc.
- Lunches have been leftovers except for today. Yup, you are seeing fast food in the picture. I went to Anderson's! DH was already eating his chicken sandwich while I was taking the picture. We have been so religious following DH's eating plan that I decided we could have a treat today and the heck with the diet. So DH had his chicken and I had Beef on a Kummelwick which you see pictured. Of course, I used a $1.00 off coupon on each to defray the cost.
- Dinners have been made at home according to the menu I posted.
- I have done 3 loads of wash this week. My bucket of dirty rags was getting full enough to add to two mopheads so that I could wash them all. All 3 loads were done in the HE's using 1 Tbsp. of detergent each. I hung the rags and mopheads up to dry on drying racks in the basement which will save on the electricity bill.
- We had a gorgeous hemlock that was planted by the company we hired die. They came to replace it with a new one today. I have a 2 year warranty on trees.
- With the exception of going to Andersons to pick up lunch today and taking DH to the dentist yesterday for a crown to be replaced and a tooth pulled , I have not driven anywhere else which has saved on gasoline and I have not been spending money. That will change tomorrow though since I have lots of shopping to do. Of course, DH still has a permanent bridge to be put in next week, so the dentist is costing us a fortune( approximately $5,000.) since we have no dental insurance. However, because we planned well for retirement, the dental expenses were accounted for in our budget.
- The mail this week has brought $ 26.99 in rebate checks, $ 15.00 in survey checks and my Free Architectural Digest Magazine.
- DH and I have been doing some weeding instead of hiring someone to do it. Of course, DH loves mowing our lawn rather than hiring someone to do it. You know, MEN and their toys!
- I made a loaf of homemade wheat bread in the breadmaker.
- We seem to be watching less and less TV. There seems to be nothing on to watch but reruns or depressing news. So that will also save on our electricity costs.
- The turkey was roasted outside in the garage in the Nesco so as to not heat up the house. It is so hot and humid this week that the A/C is running. We are trying to keep it at 74 degrees.
- I have been collecting all kinds of organizers( containers) from the Dollar Tree over the past few weeks. It is so much cheaper to buy them there than other places. My Dollar Tree is huge and has a wonderful selection. So I have been containerizing a lot of things this week to continue my process of everything having it's place.
- DH hung the new clock that arrived from Ballard Design yesterday. It is just perfect near the reading area in the great room. I am so glad that I had a coupon code for 15% off.
- I have been working on a new weekly schedule that I think will work better for me in this house. So I have been transferring it to my Franklin planner on the To Do List. I find if I write things down, they get done. I just check the planner every night, after I neaten up the house and before I go to bed so that I have an idea of what I will be doing the next day.
- At the moment, I only own 3 microfiber cloths. I have been wanting to buy a lot of them but I hadn't found a really good price on the better quality ones. Last night, I happened to turn to QVC and they had a special on 30 of the Don Aslett ones for $ 17.92. These are high quality and just what I was looking for. That is almost an unheard of price for his. So I am patiently waiting for them to arrive so that I can fold them into a spare drawer I have in the kitchen. I am hoping by always having clean ones at my finger tips, that I will NEVER buy paper towels again. In the long run, these will save many trees and lots of money.
- I have a huge floor vase in the great room. I bought 2 bundles of really neat sticks to go in it, a few weeks ago. I kept forgetting to get a bag of stones for the bottom to hold everything in place. I am glad I did. The solution was staring right at me. The dirt pile next door is full of stones. So tomorrow, I will go gather the ones I need, for free.
I am sure I did other things but I just can't seem to think right now. So please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you have done the past couple of days to save money in your household.

Menu Plan Monday
I have decided to join Organizing Junkie's Menu Plan Monday . I agree with Laura that making a menu keeps you you on top of things and I also believe that it saves you money in the long run by making you aware of what food you have to eat and what leftovers need to be used up. So here is my menu for this week:
Monday: Chicken, Pepper and Onion Stir Fry, Brown Rice, Tossed Salad, Steamed Swiss Chard
Tuesday: Sesame Dijon Whitefish, Sauteed Zucchini
Wednesday: Vera's Roast Turkey Breast with Garlic and Thyme, Yellow Squash, Tossed Salad
Thursday: Turkey with fresh veggies in a whole wheat wrap, slice of cantaloupe with fresh strawberries
Friday: My Family Arrives.....YEAH! - Grilled Fillet Mignons, Baked Potatoes with FF Sour Cream, Sauteed Mushroooms, Broccoli and Cauliflower, FF Chocolate Pudding with FF Whipped Cream
Saturday: Grilled Chicken Breasts basted with BBQ Sauce, Grilled Potato and Onion Packets Seasoned with Oregano, Basil and Garlic Olive Oil, Steamed Carrots, SF Strawberry Jello with FF Whipped Cream

Saturday Shopping
I am not going to list everything separately, but this shop at Top's totalled $ 76.41. Everything is pictured except for two Skinny Cow ice cream novelties and a box of 100% Fruit Juice Bars that desperately needed to go in the freezer. Most of it was a whole beef tenderloin that was $ 7.49 a lb. which totalled $ 38.27. I took it to the Butcher Shop and had them cut into filet mignons for the grill. He cut 14 very nice filets for me and I have the two ends for stew. This tenderloin was gorgeous. The butcher even asked me how I picked such a nice one. I told him I have been picking them for years. :-) My son, DIL, and grandaughter are arriving the end of the week so we will have a special dinner grilled outside. I also picked up two center cut loin porkchops at the butcher shop for DH to grill outside tonight for our dinner. I will be cooking swiss chard and fresh steamed green beans with slivered almonds to go with it. The yogurt(for my grandaughter), ice cream, orange juice and OxiClean were purchased with manufacturers coupons and Top's Doubler coupons. The cold cuts are for lunches this week.
It is also time to tighten the belt again. We got notice in the mail today that our health insurance premiums are going up retroactive to last April 1st on October 1st by 33 and 1/3%. This is as a result of the new healthcare bill that was passed. We also will have the usual rate increase next January. Heaven knows how much that will be! Does anyone remember President Obama promising that his healthcare bill would lower costs??? I do! Just another lie from this administration! UGH!

I Don't Have A Garden But..................
Look at all this free very fresh produce I acquired this morning! My son and DIL couldn't use their co-op produce this week so they gave it to us. The bag contained swiss chard, 2 caraflex cabbage, 2 green peppers, 1 sweet frying pepper which should be great for stir-fry, 1 cucumber, 2 yellow squash, 1 zucchini, 1 eggplant, 1 purple kohlrabi and a very nice head of green leaf lettuce. I will be incorporating most of it into our meals this week and freezing some it. I definitely won't have to shop for veggies this week!
Thanks so much to my son and DIL. We will be glad to use your co-op produce anytime you can't use it. Going through the bag this morning was like a "treasure hunt"!

Money Saving Challenge - August 6th
These are the things we did to save money:
- DH loves projects. Today he constructed a way to hang our John Deere Utility Cart, that goes on the back of the riding lawn mower, on the wall in the garage. A piece of good wood, and a pulley system contructed with a bungee cord, etc. and it is now hanging and not taking up valuable garage floor space. Total cost to us was $ 12.33. He also hung a heavy duty hook with arms that wrap around our Stihl weed whacker to get it off the floor. Cost $ 9.00!
- We turned the A/C off since the humidity has left town and our high today will only be 73. Time to get some fresh air.
- We happily noticed this morning that our lawn now seems to be coming up in the bare spots that the landscaper reseeded last Friday. It is really tough to put in a lawn in July and August with the heat. I can't wait until we can put weed killer down and get rid of the weeds. But that will have to wait until the lawn is pretty well established and the weed killer won't burn out the new grass. Hopefully, this Fall we can do that.
- I stripped our bed this morning and finally had enough sheets from prior weeks to do a load in the HE's. I also did a load of dark clothes using 1 Tbsp. of detergent for both.
- DH picked up paint samples at Home Depot when he was purchasing the items to make the utility cart holder. We want to paint our vestibule a pumpkin color. None of them are exactly what we are looking for. We want to match a color that is in our art work in the main hallway. I have a professional color wheel that designers use but I can't find it. So I will be spending some time looking for that today.
- Breakfast was eggs, a small piece of ham, and 1/2 of an English muffin made at home. Tastes so much better than going to McDonald's for an Egg McMuffin. Healthier and cheaper too.
- Lunch was a Chef's salad.
- Dinner will be pan seared scallops which are cooking in the pan above, waldorf salad, and FF homemade pistachio pudding.
- I filed a few coupons that came in the mail the last few days. Both my binder and HBA file are up to date and ready for shopping next week. I also pulled the expired coupons from my coupon folder that I keep in the car and filed new coupons in it. This file holds all coupons ( restaurant, movie, retail store coupons, etc.) but grocery ones. I always want those handy when I am on the road.
- Limited myself to one hour computer time today; otherwise the computer was shut off along with the cordless mouse saving on electricity.
- Received in the mail a Free Facial Sample from Dr. Weil, a $ 7.00 off Nature Made Vitamin coupon from the rewards program, and my Free Entertainment Weekly Magazine.
- Needed checks so I researched and found the best price through VistaPrint. Got them on sale for 50% off plus I will get back a 5% cash rebate for shopping through Ebates
- Ordered this 27 inch wall clock for our great room from Ballard Designs. I had requested a catalog from them and it came yesterday along with a new customer coupon code for 15% off. So I received 15% off plus I will get a 3% cash rebate for shopping through Ebates
- Worked on my menu for next week by looking for low fat recipes in some of my favorite cookbooks. Meals will not only be for us but for family coming to visit the end of the week.
- It finally rained here so we were able to turn off the sprinkler system for the evening watering.
- I will be reading for entertainment tonight while DH watches TV.
Please feel free to leave a comment and share with us what you did today to save money.

More Pictures!
This is the guest room. Ignore the white walls which I hate! The only rooms DH and I didn't have profressionally painted was this one, the exercise room, the bathrooms and the vestibule. We had no idea what colors we even wanted them until a few weeks ago. So they will be our Fall and Winter projects.
We needed a guest room for when our son, DIL, and grandaughter visit from Albany and for when our siblings and friends visit. This room is going to get well used in the next 4 weeks. :-)
It's comfortable and functional, has a large closet, and most importantly is right next to a full bathroom. It also is a place to put the baby things that are needed when they are not in use.
I am in the process of looking for a lampshade to replace the one on the night table since it is so outdated. Except for that and paint, the room is done.

Money Saving Challenge - August 3rd
My son took DH to Home Depot to buy this nice Weber Gas Grill last night. Now we can cook out almost every night which will reduce the amount of gas used on our utility bill. It also will cut down on the amount of heat that pours into our air conditioned house from the oven and stovetop. So that is the first thing we did to save money:
- Grilled filet mignons on the new grill and served them with tossed salad and a small baked potato with FF sour cream for dinner.
- I actually roasted 6 baked potatoes on the porch in the Nesco roaster since we will make mashed potatoes from the leftovers.
- Filled the car up with gasoline using my $ .70 off per gallon at Tops so I paid $ 2.09 a gallon.
- Went to Ace to fill the gas grill tank with propane. It only cost $14.99 for 20 lbs. We will be using them or someplace else nearby to buy propane. I have to ask my neighbor who has the cheapest price in the area for propane. I don't like the tank exchanges. Not only is it more expensive to exchange the tanks but I have read that they short change you by 5 lbs. or so.
-My son, DIL, and grandaughter are coming for a visit in a few days. I purchased this for my grandaughter to sleep on since we only have a queen size bed in the guest room:
Portable cot bed using a free trial of Amazon Prime and my Free gift certificates earned through:
SwagBucks
- I picked up 3 prescriptions at Rite Aid using $ 35.00 in Free giftcards earned through rebates to pay.
- Made a crockpot full of homemade spaghetti with meat sauce. Cooked it in the garage. I froze 8 meals for later use.
- Since I use very few coupons now, I have decided that my binder can hold them all. So I have been cutting out the ones we will use from all the inserts I have saved and then filing them in the binder. I have a separate coupon box for HBA that I take in the car with me. That way if I see a deal that I didn't know about, I can go right out to the car and get them.
- I am taking an inventory of my two freezers so that I can meal plan from the list. I believe making a menu every week will save us money. So starting next Monday, I will be posting our weekly menu.
- Washed one load of wash with 1 Tbsp. of HE detergent and cold water wash and rinse. Dried it in 30 minutes. DH leveled the washer so that it no longer moves at all on high spin so the clothes come out almost dry. I always shake them out before I put them in the dryer so that they will dry faster.
- We are still using the A/C because it has been very humid. There is supposed to be a cold front coming through on Thursday so perhaps we will be able to turn it off. Here's hoping!
- Both breakfast and lunch today were made at home. Eggs for breakfast and a tossed salad for lunch.
- Our entertainment was sitting outside tonight and enjoying a chat with two different neighbors who came by.
- We got a garden catalog in the mail today offering us $ 25.00 off a $25.00 order. All we had to pay was shipping. No savings there since we needed nothing from the catalog. So it went in the trash. I never buy just because it is a deal or savings. There is ALWAYS another deal coming!
Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you did to save money today.

More Grocery Shopping This Morning!
I have been out most of the morning running errands. Since it is the beginning of the month, I go to the bank and get the budgeted household money for the month for groceries, entertainment, gift shopping, gasoline, haircuts, clothing, etc. While I was down that way, I did some shopping at Petsmart and Wegmans. You will notice in the past couple of weeks that I have been doing a lot of stockpiling. There are a few reasons for that. My freezer and pantry was getting bare. We are having lots of company over the next few weeks, and most importantly, I feel like a "duck out of water" with all the diet restrictions going on right now. I just can't get a feel for what I should set a grocery budget at. I need to be able to be stocked so that I can start really looking for the deals when I see them on healthy food and stocking up piecemeal on things. I need to keep up my pricebook so that I will know what a really rock bottom price is on the things we are buying. I also am short on time these days, so I need to know there is food in the house to feed us and I need to menu plan around what we have.
