I plan on continuing the Money Saving Challenge for next year. But before I do, I promised that I would tell you what we have been able to save this year. Being retired, the way we save is a little bit different from the way someone with a job and income would save. They would put away into savings, stocks or any other savings vehicle, a certain portion of their income a month. As retirees on a fixed income, our savings consists of not spending the amount of money that we could in our yearly budget. It also includes any income generated from investments. For us this year, it also included a small consulting job that DH spent a few hours on. It also includes any rebate or survey checks that we did. So by doing all of those things, we were able to keep in our savings $31,117. that we could have spent in 2011. I am very happy about that since investment income is hard to earn these days. It used to be a rule of thumb that you could easily spend 4% of your investment income a year and have it last. That is no longer the case. Interest on savings accounts is a pittance. The stock market has been a roller coaster and a crap shoot over the past few years. The more money we can keep instead of spending, the more we earn. With inflation pushing up our expenses, the more we can keep for future years, the happier I am.
Now I know that many of you can't save that much money. Some of you probably don't have incomes that large. You have to remember that I am working with a lifetime of working and saving. There is just DH and I so our expenses will be less than a family with children and our savings will be more. Some of you can't save because you have debt and so you are trying to pay that off. I admire you for doing that. Pay off the debt and then start saving your nest egg. I don't want you to be discouraged. Everyone can save according to their means. We have no debt or mortgage on our home so our expenses will be less than a lot of you. We have already put our children through college, so we don't have to worry about that any more. Yes, I have that blasted credit card bill but we pay that off every month. I hate seeing that bill come in so except for the Netflix bill, gasoline and the really necessary online shopping, I will be using all cash.
So on that note, I will be continuing the Money Saving Challenge for 2012. What that means is that I will be keeping every dollar that I can in our pocket instead of handing it over to a corporation or business for their profit. My mantra is that no one will take care of you but you.
This year I will strive to post the Money Saving Challenge at least twice a week if not more. I will let you know what I am doing and how I am saving. I will let you know about my successes and my failures. Yes, I have failures too. I am hoping by doing this, I will keep myself accountable and that you will learn just a few tips that will help you along your path to financial freedom.
So as other years, I am asking any of you who would like to join me to leave a comment and let me know. I will be putting up a list on my sidebar of those who would like to participate. If you have a blog, let me know and I will put up a list of those also so that people can learn from you too. There are no rules about how many times you have to post your money saving. Do it at your own pace as time allows. The more who join, the more content there is to share and the more we can save with your tips along our journey together.
Part 3 tomorrow............

Of course I am in!! I love reading your Money Saving Challenge posts. I do want to try and do my Frugal Ramblings more often, it seems they sort of fell to the back burner these past few months. But I love to share what I am doing and pat myself on the back too. Sometimes you need the reminder that you are doing well!
You know I'm in! I usually post on Fridays along with my goals for the next week.
Great job on the savings!
No doubt, I am in ...
Been already working on some more challenges and of course some changes. I agree and like that the goal is for each and everyone, what they are setting themselves for. So count me in...
Hi KC,
You are so right KC. As soon as blogger fixes the problem with adding to gadgets, I will get the new list up. Thanks for joining.
Hi Lucky,
Thanks. I will be adding you to the list.
Hi Ursula,
You are in!
I am in too.
The dilemna of low interest on savings accounts and the no safety in the stock market is a bad one. So even when we do save money, it is hard to know where to put it.
Me again -- would you be interested in me making a button that we could all copy to our side bars and use in our posts? It would look something like this:

Let me know if you're interested -- I've wanted to learn how to make one and you could be my test subject :)
If not, not big deal!
I'm in too Precious! I really need to start tracking this, and with the new year looming in a few weeks/days, this is a great resolution! Hope all is well!
So glad you will continue to post your savings. I always look forward to these posts.
You are an inspiration to those of us wanting to save.
Hi Rhonda,
Glad to see you join. I will add you to the list.
Hi Lucky,
I love that idea. I would love you to do that. I will caution you...I am computer illiterate. You will have to show me how to grab it and put it on my blog. You know my e-mail. If I have trouble, my DIL will be here and can help me.
Hi spaghetti0625,
Everything is great! Glad to have you aboard. I will add you to the list.
Hi Theresa,
Thanks for your kind words.
I am excited about these posts!
I would love to take part again in 2012. Count me in.
Hi Hunie,
I hope I can live up to your expectations. :-)
Hi Elaine,
I have added you.
I follow a lot of coupon/frugal blogs and yours is my most favorite. If I only have time to read one, I choose yours. I am very excited about this coming year. I was one of the lucky ones and got a better job last month, so I want to be sure my extra income is saved, not spent. I am 31 and working to pay off debt and my student loans. You are my inspiration! Thank you.
Hi Precious,
I am so happy that you will be continuing this next year! I would love to join in this time. You don't have to add another link or anything since you so graciously placed me on your sidebar under "Buffalo Blogs" already but committing myself to this will make me more accountable. I am still unsure exactly how I am going to set up my posts for this and how much detail I will include but the wheels are turning :) Thank you for everything that you have taught me thus far about saving money!
- Amanda
P.S. @Lucky, I think that is a fantastic idea and would love to have a button that links back to Frugal Makes Cents! It is very kind of you to offer to make that!
Hi Amanda,
Welcome. I am so glad you are joining us. I have a feeling you will contribute well. It was so very nice of Lucky to offer that.
Hi Erin,
Wow! Congrats on finding a better job in this economy and for having a plan for that extra. You all inspire me.
Hi Precious,
I'm in! I absolutely love your blog and all your great ideas. We were not able to get all of our 2011 financial goals accomplished but because of saving/couponing we were able to better "prepare" for the income that we received this year, which was 50% less than last year.
I agree with Lucky and love the button idea as well. I would be more than happy to post that button.
Hi Geri,
I am glad that you are aboard for another year. Lucky is going to make my button and we'll seeif I can put it on.
i'll be joining in as well. Not as drastic as your plan but hopefully I can save some money for the future.
Hi Jenny,
Glad to have you aboard. I am adding your blog to my sidebar.
