January 1, 2013 Money Saving Challenge
I was up bright and early to start my day. After taking my navy shower and brushing and flossing my teeth with free products, it was time to enjoy my one cup of homemade coffee and check the comments on my blog.
One of the resolutions I have made is to play all of our CD's from our collection this year. Some of them haven't been used in years. So this morning I put " Ace Of Base" by the Sign in the under the cabinet radio in the kitchen. I am hoping by doing this we will cut down on the amount of time the TV is turned on in this house. The radio cost significantly less to use than the TV.
Breakfast was once over easy eggs and breakfast sausage. That Bob Evans maple sausage was so good. I cooked 2 for each of us in the microwave in just one minute. There was no grease and the flavor was delicious. DH loved them and asked if I could get more. I said sure since they are on sale after coupon for $1.00 a box.
After putting the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and cleaning the counters, stovetop, and sink with my microfiber, antibacterial spray, and stainless cleaner( all purchased either for free or cheap after coupon), I decided to make a list of errands that needed to be run today. DH's prescription was supposed to be ready at Rite Aid. But as usual, they only had 5 pills so I have to go back tomorrow. However, it was quiet there so they were able to put our new drug plan cards in the system relatively quickly. Since Aldi's was not open today and I need eggs and juice which they have the cheapest, I will go there and Rite Aid and fill the car up with gasoline tomorrow. After looking my list over twice and making sure that everything was in my grocery budget plan for this year, I was on my way. But not before I fixed the coffee pot for tomorrow morning using the water in the pot that I fill while waiting for the water at the faucet to get hot.
First stop was Rite Aid where I tried to get the script but I did get 1 Dawn dish liquid for $ .79 after coupon. When did Dawn become just 9 oz. in a bottle? Yikes. I will definitely be diluting this. I also picked up some Loreal hair color for $ 6.99 after coupon. I pay $65. every couple of months to get my hair colored so I have decided to do it myself and keep the extra money this year in my bank account. So with tax I paid $ 8.66.
On the way home I stopped at Tops and picked up 4 more boxes of the sausage for $1.00 each after coupon, a large package of boneless chicken breasts on sale for $ 1.79 a lb. which cost $8.63, and a bottle of Sprite Zero which I had a free coupon for. So I spent $ 12.76 which included tax and bottle deposit. Yes I am including those in my $ 200. budget because it is the real cost of purchasing them. When I get the bottle deposits back, I will add them back into my grocery budget.
So I started this month with a $ 200. grocery budget and spent $ 21.42 today for a balance left that I can spend of $ 178.58.
Then it was time to walk for 45 minutes on the treadmill. That saves me gym fees.
Dinner will be leftover homemade macaroni and cheese, broccoli, ham and peach pie. We must not let the leftovers go to waste. Waste not, want not! For lunch we just had nutrigrain bars.
DH will most likely watch football for the rest of the day. I am going to read and possibly watch some TV tonight.
The one thing we always do on New Years Day is look at our net worth. We have it in Quicken so it is easy for us. What I want all of you to do is to write down or use quicken or another spreadsheet to document your liquid assets ( bank accounts, investments, etc.) and the value of your home as of today. Be reasonable on the value of your home. Write down what you could get for it if you sold it in the next month. Then write down all of your debts that are outstanding: credit cards, car loans, student loans, mortgages, etc. Subtract the total of your debt from your assets and this is your net worth as of today. Keep those figures in a place where you can find them on December 31, 2013. You will need them to determine how much your net worth has gone up this next year when we reach the end of it. Don't skip this! It is the only way that you will know how much you actually saved over the year.
Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you did to save some money today.
