January 6, 2013 Money Saving Challenge

I cooked the nice dinner that you see above on my plate. DH asked for tator tots instead of  French fries so since I had them in the stockpile, I said okay. It all tasted great with a nice glass of wine.

We did the following money saving today:

- Due to crummy weather today, I did not shop. So no gasoline used.

- I washed two loads of clothes and sheets in the HE washer using express wash and hung the sheets to dry. I dried the clothes using the minimum drying time possible in the HE dryer.

- DH  cleaned the dryer vent hosing which was getting clogged. We don't need a fire.

-  Lights are off until dark. Heat is at 66.

- West's birthday is while we are on vacation at Disney. It's hard for me to believe he will be 3. So I wrapped his presents in the Sunday comic pages that I have been saving from the newspaper. I want him to have them for the trip so he will be getting them early. He is more interested in what is inside than the wrapping paper.

-  Walked 30 minutes on the treadmill.

- Unclogged a drain with baking soda, vinegar and hot water.

- Made my own shake and bake from bread crumbs, seasonings and parmesan cheese.

- Cleaned the shower tile with our homemade cleaner.

- Entertainment tonight will be watching some NCIS reruns.

I also want to tell you about a product that I purchased a long time ago. It is above with the leftover tator tots on it. I have two of these baking sheets and use them all of the time for potatoes( any kind white or sweet potato fries ), mozzarella sticks, taquitos, fried chicken, etc. These are by far the best items that I have ever purchased for the kitchen. Doing them on these, there is no comparison to a cookie sheet. It makes everything crispy all the way around because the air can circulate to all of the item.

Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you did to save money today.

I can't wait to hear about your trip! I'm sure it will be nice to get out of the cold weather for a little while.

Thanks for the tip about those baking sheets! I had no idea these existed; what a GREAT idea.

Hi Gina,

It sure will. I am so tired of the cold.

You are welcome.

What is your cookie sheet called? Have you ever tried meatloaf on it?

After the kids' hair cuts we had a nice chicken dinner at home, watched the Redskins lose, and now I'm watching Downton Abbey.

Had to go to the doctor today. Went to the after hours clinic (cost $25.00) and learned I had Shingles again. Cost of prescriptions was $20.00.
Made menu for week. Got groceries after church today. Stayed within my budget, got all I need for next week for $28.88. Washed 2 loads of laundry in cold water. Hung to dry outside today. It got to 50 today with lots of sun shine.
Clipped a few coupons for next week. Will need dog food next week.
We will watch reruns of NCIS too. Going to bed early with my Kindel to read. I feel pretty rough to be honest and have to work tomorrow.

You are going to have so much fun. We do the same with wrap sometimes and you tie a bow on the gift instead of buying wrap. My mom always did that.

You did great! Congratulations

Hi Jillian,

It looks like you are having a nice evening.

They are called nonstick crisper sheets. I got the from QVC. They would not work for meatloaf. There are holes in them. You would have a greasy oven.

Hi Roxie,

I am so sorry that you have shingles. How painful that is! Take it as easy as you can.

You had a good savings day.

Them sheets sound like winners.

Love reading the comments as well as the posts.
Thanks for taking the time to post. It really is a motivator.
Went to the grocery for a few items that cost 54.00!! I had to keep looking at the receipt, but it was correct.
Have to buy a special calculator for my daughters probability and statistics class...it's over 100.00!!
Class starts tomorrow, and I held out for one I could borrow or buy, but NO such luck!

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the nice comments. Sometimes you have to spend. I will be today because I am trying to get me ready for the trip and leave DH with stuff too.

I remember those school and college costs oh so well. Calculators are expensive. It's a shame that you couldn't find one used.
