Money Saving Challenge: January 23,2013

These are the things that I did today to save money:

*  Got a $ 10. Home Depot Gift Card from Recyclebank .

* Ordered a $ 5.75 Amazon.com Gift Card from Saving Star.

Cooking a Kirkwood Boneless Turkey Breast for dinner in the convection oven saving 25% natural gas usage over doing it in the regular oven.

* Will be slicing up the leftover turkey breast for lunch sandwiches.

* Spending some time researching how I can save even more energy. My electric usage was up 100KWH last month and I can't figure out why. We did use a few strings of lights outside over Christmas but they are LED's and they take very little energy. Plus we used them last year and my bill was 100KWH less last year. Nothing has changed except how cold it is but I heat with natural gas so that does not explain the extra energy usage. I have to really think every time I do something.

* Mail today brought a Q for a Free 15 ct. box of Totino's Pizza Rolls from a Pillsbury Cookie rebate and 3 Free Loreal Samples. I also got  a large plastic bag to put a donation in. I have nothing to donate so I saved it to use as a garbage bag.

* Since tonight is an off night for TV for me, I will catch up on all of my shows from last week On Demand.

Please feel free to leave a comment and share with all of us what you did to save money today.

Washed a load of sheets in HOT water and bleach. Hung them to dry in the sun outside. (It is 75 here today) We have had a stomach bug going around so I felt the need to use hot water and bleach. Hope the does of sun shine will help too. I also washed a load of towels and underware. Hung them out too.
Paid the tax bill on line with bill pay. (no stamp) Sent in the water bill payment too. Again with bill pay. (no stamp required)
Supper will be quick Hash, salad, and corn. I also made some biscuits.
No money spent shopping today. Just the bills.
I am reading books got for free on my kindel. Love that thing...
Did send son some money today. His job has had some huge cut backs. His pay is down almost $100.00 a pay day. So I did send him my 2 months of 'mad' money. ($40.00) I know he can use it...I would just spend it on something frivilous.

Hi Roxie,

You were very busy today. Kudos on all of your savings.

How nice that you could help your son out.

Precious, wouldn't your gas fueled furnace have an electric ignition?

The weather here was in the upper 60's or low 70's so we didn't even start a fire in the stove when we got up...that saved on wood. The Littles are here during the week. I've been unplugging the heater in the bathroom--they fan the door going in an out; and sometimes they forget to close it all together. So I'm saving money by not heating the bathroom. Makes for quick trips for myself and the Honey.
I've started putting the pc on sleep mode when I walk away--it is only a couple of extra seconds.
Am considering *coupons* again-- I never feel like it is a bargain; especially if it isn't a product I'd buy anyway.
Next month we'll be attempting our first NO SPEND month.

Have a frugal week! Pat

Hi CTMOM,

Yes it does. But DH says the ignition uses very minimal electricity so that can't be it. Thanks for suggesting that though.

Hi Pat,

Good luck on you no spend month. I wish we were as warm as you. We are in the single digits or teens every day. Nice savings on you heat.

Welcome back Precious!!
Not a nice welcome regarding weather I am sure!! Talk about freezing!!

I am doing all I can food wise and spending. This past week I had to go over my budget because we needed dog food and Tops had the great deal on chicken legs & thighs. So I went about $28 over my budget. I've been under these past few weeks, so all should be good, but I still stress.

It's been so cold the furnace has been running like crazy. Were on a budget so no surprises regarding actual cost. I had to keep reminding the girls to turn off the lights and the electronics when they leave a room. They have gotten better, but still.

Other than that, trying to stay safe and warm. I did start school, so I'm spending extra gas on travel, but it's only 2x a week.

Hi Didi,

It's so good to hear that you are doing well my friend. So happy to hear that you are going to school.

I know that you are doing everything you can to stay within budget. Doing the same here. I actually think I will lots of money to transfer from January's budget into February's.

I had my ducts cleaned yesterday which was $$, but it will cut down on wear on the machine and hopefully help DD have fewer colds. Our house is 60 years old and it had never been done before. Yuck.

For dinner last night I pulled out a lot of leftovers and kind of made a buffet. The kids loved it!

Our electric costs vary sometimes because of the number of days they charge us for. It can vary from around 28 to 34 depending on the calendar.Even a couple of days makes a difference.

Hi Jillian,

Let me know if the duct cleaning makes a difference for her.

That must have been fun for the kids.

Hi Gramma D.,

Thanks for that tip. I looked at ours and they were the same.
