Money Saving Challenge This Past Week
So since I have been at home, I have been doing some things here to save money.
DH's king size pillow had started to leak stuffing. Knowing how expensive these are to replace, I sewed the seam up to stop that from happening. I know eventually that I will have to make a new cover for the pillow so I am keeping my eye open for a heavy enough fabric to do that.
The mail brought a very nice sample from Atkins. There were three Atkins bars, a free coupon for any frozen entree and a carb counter book. This could come in handy with my WW's. By the way I have lost another 3 lbs. this week for a total of 10 lbs. When I think of what a 10 lb. sack of potatoes feels like, I am very happy.
I did three loads of wash this week. One whites, one darks, and one with sheets were all done in cold water using the express cycle on the HE washer and then hung to dry.
Besides making the Asian Pork Tenderloin this week, I also made turkey soup, and WW's cheddar burgers. With leftovers, those are all the dinner meals I had to make. For lunches, we have been having tossed salads and chicken salad on saltines. Breakfasts have been plain yogurt with granola on top and, egg beater mushroom omelettes. Snacks have been apples, oranges, celery sticks with a touch of peanut butter. I have cooked a variety of veggies with our dinners. All meals have been eaten at home.
I have exercised most of the week in our exercise room. Yesterday, I didn't because my back was bothering me. I have learned on those days to just forgo it. I can't wait until the weather gets nice enough to walk outside.
I ordered some food grade storage buckets with gamma lids to store the rice I bought and got some extras for other items that I will be stockpiling. I spent some time in the pantry in the basement reorganizing the shelves so that DH can find things when I ask him to.
With gasoline prices rising and if new regulations most likely hitting the supermarkets, we are going to see food prices skyrocket again. Here is the article on why the food prices will again rise:
This is one of the reasons that I am again stockpiling and making sure that I have a year or more in food and toiletries.
I spent some time filing printed coupons and updating my price book so that I know a good stockpiling deal when I see it. With prices changing so rapidly, this is one area that I keep up to date.
I purchased the stylus for my tablet using $ 30. in Best Buy Rewards. I received $ 10. in Amazon.com gift certificates from Swagbucks.
Spent some time deciding on what gifts I will get or make for birthdays and Christmas this year. Keeping my eyes open for deals for those gifts. Since I now have a healthy envelope stuffed with money that I earned from points programs, Swagbucks and rebates, I can start buying.
I came home from a grocery shop to Top's on Tuesday to find that our utility company had been here. They knocked on the door and told DH that they were going to change the gas meter out. When DH asked why, they said they randomly have to change out so many meters a year. Both DH and I know this is true. However, they told DH they took the reading but they never gave it to him. I called the utility company to get it because we have a right to know what it is. I know for a fact that they lose meters they exchange out. I want to make sure that we don't get over billed this month because of their carelessness. After talking to many people, I was able to get the reading so I will know that the next bill is accurate.
DH and I have been tempted many times over the past couple of weeks to turn up the heat. It has been so cold at 68 in our home because of the high ceilings. But instead we have put on fleece and sweaters.
I had a few marks on the drum inside my dryer. I have no idea why it gets these marks but today I used a Mr. Clean eraser( I got free when I lived in AZ) and it cleaned them in no time.
DH snowblowed the driveway. Having a snowblower and doing the work yourself saves you on paying someone to do it.
We continue to listen to CD's during the daytime most of which we haven't listened to in a long time. We also have watched two movies on Netflix this week.
For dinner tonight, I pulled two individual meals from the freezer that were left over from the meals I made for DH to eat while I was in Florida. There was one lasagna meal and one chili meal. I will have the chili on 1/2 cup of brown rice and DH will eat the lasagna. These will be heated very quickly in the microwave to save on energy.
I made a pitcher of SF iced tea for a beverage for DH this week. He is down to two bottles of Coke. I have been drinking cold tap water.
That is about it for this week. I plan on doing the money saving challenge from now on on Saturdays for the week. Other posts will be done on the other days.
Please feel free to leave a message and share with us what you have done to save money this week.
