Today is Senior Citizen Discount Day at Top's Supermarket. So I get an extra 6% off. Because of that I did some stockpiling. This is what I purchased today:
20 cans of Hunt's Tomato Sauce - $ .50 each = $10.00
4 boxes of Scotties - $ 1.00 each - used $ 1./4 Top's Q and $ 1./4 MQ = $ 2.00
2 International Delight Creamer - $2.00 each - used $ .55/1 IPQ Doubled = $ .90 each or $ 1.80
2 LaChoy Water Chestnuts - $1.00 each = $ 2.00
2 LaChoy Bamboo Shoots - $ 1.00 each = $ 2.00
3 Prego Heart Smart Spaghetti Sauce - 3 for $ 5.00 - used $1./1 MQ = $ 4.00
1 Jello Mix Ins - 3 for $4.00 = $1.34 - used $1./1 Q = $ .34
Received 6% Discount of $ 1.33
Total OOP was $ 20.97.
Then I stopped at Aldi's and purchased:
4 lb. Bag of Navel Oranges - $ 1.49
1 Cantaloupe - $ 1.29
2 Bags of Medium Shrimp - $ 4.99 each = $ 9.98
2 Cans of 100% Orange Juice - $ 1.29 each = $ 2.58
Total OOP was $ 15.34.
I started the month with a grocery budget of $ 200. plus the $ 55.13 left from January totals $ 255.13 minus the $ 36.31 I spent today leaves $ 218.82 for the rest of the month.
Last year, I kept track of what we used all year long so that I would have an idea of what we need to stockpile for a year for we two adults. I determined that I need 144 cans of tomato sauce. I have one #10 can so I picked up 20 cans today. Plus I have 8 more on the shelf. We also need 12 boxes of tissues. I picked up 4 today and I have 8 in my stockpile so there is no need to pay anything for any more for a year. If they are free, I will get them, if not I won't. The water chestnuts and bamboo shoots are all I need for a year also. I need many more creamers but only buy them when I have a coupon and they are on sale. I make the majority of my spaghetti sauce but like to keep 12 jars on the shelf to use when I am rushed. Today I picked up 3 and I have 8 on the shelf so I only need 1 more. The Jello- Mix Ins are to treat my grandson.
Checking my inventory, I have 4 mayonaise and that is all I need for one year. I also have 16 bottles of shampoo. Since we only used 12 last year I have more than plenty. Those things won't be on my list for a very long time.
I am glad that I have extra money this month in the budget since I also plan on a BJ's stockpile trip soon.

Looks like you did good!
Thanks M.
Great planning ahead.
We went to Sam's this afternoon. Got some much needed items. Dishwasher soap, OdoBan is something I use a lot of, I got two bottles, I got a large bottle of large bottle of Pinesol too. But my best buy was a huge can of infant formula. I almost fainted when it rang up at just 1 cent. It seems I got the last can (before they change styles of the can) and it was only a penny. It is going to last a month. This is all for my day care business so this is on a different budget plan. Total spent was $36.76
Wow! I've never thought about keeping track of what we use for the year. It's all guess work. I know i run out of tomatoes every year. This is an aha moment for me. Thanks!
Hi Roxie,
That was quite a buy on the formula!
Hi Momsav,
Keeping track is the only way that I can be sure not to waste anything. Overbuying more than I could use is a waste of money.
Glad I could help!
Great job! How is the Aldi's shrimp? Have you had it before?
I have to go to BJs soon. I used our last carrot today and I'm almost out of their frozen peppers and onions, which I use all the time. I've been buying their sugar too since most groceries have switched from 5# to 4# bags.
Great idea to keep up with how much you consume in a year! I'm not sure I'm that organized, though, but I think I'd like to give that a try.
What great deals.
I am going to try to start stockpiling items that we use the most. Is there a set amount of $$ that you use to start? I have read that some use $10 a week for stockpiling. Any advice would be appreciated.
Oops...sorry if that went through a billion times. The comment moderation things kept making me do it over and over. Sorry if I sent numerous copies of my comment.
Hi Jillian,
I use the shrimp in recipes, not to eat as shrimp cocktail. It's as good as our Top's here which is $2.+ more. Thanks for the tip on the other items.
Hi Gayle,
It's pretty easy. I just made a list of commonly used items and put an X every time I emptied something next to it.
Hi Theresa,
I am juts trying to stay within my budget for the month. So if I have extra, I will use it to stockpile. If you have an exta $5., $10. or $ 20. a month just use it to build the stockpile.
Theresa,
I only got it once. :-)
Great shopping and spending. I use only tomato paste and buy the #10 cans, portion using the snack baggies and freeze it.
A few years back, when geting ready to clea the freezer, cooking down what was in it, I noticed a lot of things that were bought but rarely used. I did the same, kept a list of what was in the freezer and what we use all the time. I hope that by the time 31. Dec rolls around I will have enough in the there, for a year. Will think of a challenge next year ...:)...
Hi Urmelche,
Thanks for sharing.
WTG Precious!!
Awesome shopping my friend, as usual!
I have learned so much from you, and keep learning! I will be forever in your debt!♥
Now I know to keep track of my mayonnaise and stuff. I never over stock, but now I will keep track. Since we have shelving I think I will splurge and buy a little compact clipboard and clip it on the shelving!
Thank you again!
This is my next step in my stockpiling progress: figuring out what we use annually and using that figure to keep costs at lowest possible point and keep a good rotation on my pantry. It's just us two here as well with the occasional long weekend visit from one family of my children (the others don't stay long weekends).
Hi Didi,
Thanks. I am glad that I could help. That,s all I do. I keep a list and when I open something I put an x next to it. Then at the end of the year I just count the x's.
Hi Terri,
Good luck with it. It works well for us.
