We Continue To Try to Hold the Line on Expenses

We continue to try to hold the line on money flying out the door but there is some spending that just can't be helped. I forgot to tell you that we spent $ 21.00 for our car inspection last Friday. Today we also paid  $ 29.11 for our monthly alarm monitoring, $ 334. for our yearly homeowners insurance premium, $ 20. for prescription co-pays and $  1.25 for a gallon of distilled water. The $1.25 comes out of the grocery budget which now leaves $ 181.34 for the rest of the month. So the total spent so far this month is $ 854.35. It's so handy to have my little notebook to write down anything we spend while we are out and any bill that we mail out. This will give me a true total of all spending for the month. I promised you I would document it all and I am.

Since we got home the only time I went out was to a Doctor's appointment. On the way home, I stopped and picked up the prescriptions and distilled water at the drugstore. I am trying to consolidate trips and lower the gasoline costs for the month since we spent so much on gas on the trip.

Later today I am headed to the markets for a few necessities and to stock on frozen fruit for smoothies at Aldi's. I am not passing up their great sale prices this week on those. I also need to pick up some things at Dollar Tree to stuff some eggs for our Easter Egg Hunt. My DIL, who I visited last weekend, gave me some great ideas on what to put in them for West. I might also stop at Office Max since it is right next to Dollar Tree.

Yesterday, I did some quick picking up of the house and some dusting. I washed a load of laundry in the HE's using cold water and hung them to dry. I also cooked a crockpot full of beef stew which DH has been having a craving for. I defrosted a sirloin tip roast ( bought on sale for $ 2.99 a lb ) that was in my freezer and DH cut it up into stew beef. I added potatoes, celery, onions and carrots. I cooked it in beef bouillon and thickened the broth for gravy an hour before it was done. I served it for dinner and there is enough for 2 more meals.  After dinner, I rode the recumbent bike for 30 minutes to try to burn off some of those calories.

The picture above is free samples of baby proofing door or cabinet latches, Eucerin repair cream for dry skin and a $ 3.00 Pinecone check that all came in the mail today. I will ask my son if he can use the latches. If not, I will save them to put in a new baby gift basket. The check will get cashed and put in my gift fund.

We continue to try to save on energy around here by making crockpot meals, keeping the lights off until dark and keeping the heat bills down. DH did turn the heat down a little while we were away so that should be a nice reduction on our next utility bill.

Please feel free to leave a comment and  share with all of us how are you are doing saving money.

Hi Precious, I was wondering how you got such a good deal on homeowners insurance. Ours is over $1000. a year for a 50s ranch. Thank you, Angela

Hi Angela,

Since I used to rate insurance for an insurance agency, I can tell you that there are many factors involved in premium including where you live, how close you are to hydrants and the fire house, etc. We have our insurance with Liberty Mutual and also get college discount and a discount for monitored fire and burglar alarms, etc. There are so many factors that go into pemiums. The only way to find a better deal is to calldifferent companies and do your research. Since we have our car with the same company, we also get a discount for that.

Thank you Precious. I am definitely going to do some talking to my agent! What do you mean by a college discount? I have never heard of that. Angela

I went grocery shopping Thursday & Fri & between both days saved over $300 by combining coupons & sales. I also got many free items to numerous to detail also.

On a sad note tho I found out last Sunday that Meijers here in northern Indiana (mine is included in this) & the lower part of Michigan will be elminating double coupons by March 30th. What is so frustrating (besides many things) is that they are only elminating some stores & not all.

I of course facebooked them to let them know how I felt (respectfully of course) & their canned answer was "thank you for your feedback." Really that's the best they can do?? Very disappointing. I also told a manager yesterday how I felt & he was like oh sorry. Ya right you are I was thinking. :(

I will still shop there b/c I will be able to get some good deals but for my doubles I will be shopping the Kroger store in my area that still doubles & is the only grocery left to do so.

So the money they would of gotten from that will now be going to another grocery store. I also had a several ppl tell me that they will no longer shop there including my mom. So more money out of there pocket.

In this economy & people not making as much & a Kroger that still doubles in the area this makes no sense to me.

You are very lucky that your coupons higher than 50 cents double. Our Meijers & Kroger quite that many yrs ago.

I have a feeling that sometime in the future Kroger will also elminate double coupons b/c I have read on other blogs about certain Krogers in other states doing this. Only a matter of time.

Sorry so long but just had to vent to fellow couponer that would understand. :)

So glad you had a great time with your family & how great that your son was honored. We have a family friend who has volunteered over 20 yrs of her service to our local firestation & has now retired from it.

Hi Shanna,

Glad you had such a great shopping trip. I had heard that Meijers was stopping double coupons but didn't realize it was only some stores. Interesting! Perhaps they will bring them back if they lose business. If double coupons went away here I would make everything from scratch. I am doing more and more of that because of the prices anyhow.

Thanks for your kind words.

Hi Angela,

The college where DH got his Masters at made a deal with the insurance company that we do business with to give a discount to alumni and students. Ask about that when you make your calls. You never know your school may have the same discount. You don't know unless you ask.
